You could try using crashplan, and setting up both computers on the same account and restore your files and only select the folder of pictures to backup.  This guide below may be helpful

Having her do what I suggested is probably an idea. Her having the photos herself means that if something every happens to her phone, she has the photos immediately. Plus, she could remove the photos from her phone to free up some space.

If she doesn't know how to do it, you could remote desktop into her PC/laptop and do the stuff (she just has to connect the phone to the PC and the before mentioned optional hard drive).

Also, I'm assuming we're not talking iPhone here.

As someone suggested, try crashplan. Its free when you backup from one location to another. As long as both of you have enough bandwidth, everything will work.

The only difference is between my suggestion and the previous one that also suggested crashplan, don't do a restore, just run a backup from your in law's to yours. After the initial run, every new file will be automated. Make sure to deselected some hidden folders like AppData. This are hidden and defaulted. Its a significant chunk of size so deselect it. Make sure to set RAM size inside crashplan so you have set aside 1GB for every TB of a dataset. If you don't have enough RAM to spare, create multiple smaller data sets for backup.

Depends, how big is this backup?

Anything under 5~10GB just send it over the internet through any platform you want, I suggest making small 500MB sized password protected zip files and just uploading to MEGA, so she can give you the encryption key.

If it's more than that, a 64/128GB (or more) USB key through the mail will do the job. Because lets face it, unless she has very high upload speed, it would take longer to upload than it would for snail mail to reach you.
