I am planing on buying a Nintendo switch sometime in the next month or so, but I just have 1 question. I have heard a few people saying that they were getting some frame drops on breath of the wild, so much so that it was distracting from the experience. Is this true?

Depends on the person. Some people can't stand any type of frame drop while others are ok with a few occasional ones. If I where you I would wait a bit till it drops in price because to be fair at its current state with the amount of games available it isn't worth the 300$ asking price.

Yet people on this forum drop more than that on a new phone that doesn't do anything new than the last one that they had.

A buddy of mine brought his into school and played breath of the wild the entire time while hiding the switch on his laptop keyboard (behind the screen and effectively invisible from the teacher in the front of the room), and his hands (with the detachable controllers in them) in his lap.

I was so jealous.

I personally wouldn't buy it because I would never use it as a handheld which seems like a key feature and a major part of the price tag.

Methinks I'll be getting a used WiiU and soft modding that mother instead.

Wait a few months for details on VC and more games. The only reason to recommend it at launch is if you are a Zelda fan and don't have a Wii U.

I've put about 30 hours into Zelda on the Wii U. Looking at twitch streams of switch gameplay, the framerate drops aren't nearly as game breaking as on the Wii U. With the Wii U towns run at about 15 FPS, certain areas with lots of spell detail or foliage can bog down to sub 10 (like Hyrule castle and forest areas). One dungeon was 15 FPS all the way through. Haven't seen anything nearly that bad with the switch.

I'll probably wait to see if/when they get a better game catalog than what they have at launch...  Maybe around the holidays this year?  Right now about the only thing that has interest for me is Breath of the Wild and Disgaea 5 Complete (although I already have it for PS4) for the mobility aspect.

I consider myself a bit of a snob with framerate and resolution but BotW on the Switch is absolutely playable and a great experience. I usually only see one or two drops per hour (usually one or less) and it's not cripplingly slow. It drops to 30-40 usually, sometimes as bad as 20-30 but it recovers quickly. And bad performance can easily ruin a game for me but I don't think it's as bad as many say on the Switch.

I play at 1080p60 on my pc, not 120/144Hz so that may make a difference.

The biggest problem is the lack of a launch catalogue. But BotW can easily keep you busy for 200+ hours so that shouldn't be a huge problem.

On PC, I play with 165hz monitor so I am a bit spoiled in case of framerate, but I don't see a problem with Switch. Yes, it has occasional fps drops that it seems super laggy in BotW, but that happens so rarely and only for few seconds that I couldn't care less.

Switch runs Botw and 60fps so even if it drops 25fps it will still be perfectly playable which it probably wouldn't drop that much

are you sure it runs at 60?

Why do you always die right after I fix you?

I bought the switch with zelda, and I have to say that the it's the best game you will ever play in any zelda series. You work for everything, so you don't get freebies like in other zelda series.

The pair up with TV has times where the frames will dip, but nothing too bad. If you have it in handheld mode then you will experience no issues with frame rate.

Sorry I've heard some quite negative things about the switch, if it's not too much to ask can I get your opinion about the console as a whole? The kinks? The positives?

Positive:

-Very simple UI. Basically you would spend a max of 5 mins in settings since there is nothing to do there.

-Switching to console mode is very simple, and it looks a lot better than what you will ever see on youtube. It's not like "Hey I can use my laptop to connect to my TV." The visual quality is so much better, so the difference in quality you will notice.Handheld mode is not bad quality, and I would still say it's very viable to use. To a point that I don't mind playing on handheld mode.

-Handheld mode is not as awkward as people are saying it. You will not get any strains holding it for long periods of time. The weight is also perfect so your arm wouldn't be tired if you held it for hours.

-Kickstand is not as bad as CNET puts it. It does the job perfectly, and you wouldn't have to worry it would fall over.

-Very easy to take apart, and the insides are easy replacements

-You can create a lot of users, so you can share with your whole family and not have to worry deleting your profile for a game.

Negatives:

-Well it was much smaller than I thought in terms of screen size. You will basically get as big as a iPhone 6 Plus screen size. It's not terrible, and it scales well at this screen, but your first impressions wouldn't be nice.
-Charge port falls out pretty easily.

-Brightness is not the best. I live in California, and it's very bright over here. My wife had trouble playing in the car with it. (She was able to, but you have to focus)

Overall impressions. At first I thought I made a bad decision, since the small screen size, and knowing nintendo they possibly will release the XL version of the switch. After playing on it extensively I came to realize that it's possibly the best compromise they could have done. With the 2 joycons attached it feels a little bigger, and if they have made it larger than it would add more weight. Screen brightness is not a big issue with me since I usually do not play outside. (Either way it has a 2 hour and 30 minutes battery life when playing Zelda) I don't regret my purchase at all. Maybe it has to do the fact that Zelda is incredibly fun. At no point in the game was I frustrated with the switch, so it does it's intended purpose, and you shouldn't worry about the negatives.

If you have a option to buy it soon you can try it out, and sell it on eBay if it's not for you. They are going for $450

Awesome! Thank you very much! I'm trying to get as many people's opinions as I can before I purchase, this was really helpful.

Cons for me:

amount of games available atm and their price (why is bomberman 50 euros?!)

cannot be charged while on kickstand (dont need it anyways)

the screen is too small if you actually wanna use the kickstand and cant place it arms length from you

the need to turn off "motion aiming" in zelda when I am in train, otherwise I cant hit anything

Glitches in Nintendo shop while paying with credit cards but I got refund on everything in minutes without asking so it is not a big deal

No media player for now?

Pros:

comfortable in handheld

detached joycons are so comfy for me that there is no need to buy the pro controller

battery life - 2.5 hours of Zelda in handheld is perfect for me for one day and I can use my portable battery pack if I need more

screen size is perfect in handheld

UI is very easy

powerful enough for zelda without lagging. it lags a little bit only while it autosaves

switching between docked and handheld takes seconds

The cons are very minor, nothing which would give me the reason to not buy it. I bought Switch mainly because of its handheld capabilities and it works better than I expected. I wouldnt buy it only as a home console but for gaming on the go, it is great.
