Got a new GTX 1080 but now I need to build a new PC I think, please have a look.

Hello community!

 

Only found LinusTechTips a few weeks ago and I am completely hooked, hooked to the point where I want to build a PC again. I am 34 yrs old and haven't built a PC in a long while, used to do it all the time. Since I am working from home more these days I need to beef up my PC as I do video editing, 3d rendering etc.

 

I have recently purchased a MSI GTX Aero 8OC 1080 (ugh much to my disappointment when the Ti came out!). I have noticed that I am loosing about 10% - 15% performance in benchmarks with the same card others are using. 
So I think it is time to upgrade.


What I have at the moment, dont laugh! Its an old Lenovo Razer which has had a few upgrades down the road.

Specs are:

Generic Lenovo 90AV000YUK Haswell board (I said dont laugh! :) )
Core i7 4790 (3.6Ghz)
32 GB DDR3 Kingston KHX1600C10D3 (800Mhz Edit: 1600Mhz)
2 x 1 TB Samsung EVO 850 SSD
1 x 2 TB WD Black Series
Nvidia MSI GTX 1080 Aero 8 OC
Corsair RM850W PSU


I am thinking of upgrading to:
Corsair CC-9011098-WW Crystal Series 570X Case
ASUS LGA 1151 MAXIMUS IX HERO Intel Z270
Corsair CW-9060025-WW Hydro Series H100i V2 240 Cooler
Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2 GHz
Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4x 8GB)

 Most of these have been inspired by Linus and Luke as they seem to trust these brands

Try first maybe overclocking your RAM. it really might help you reclaim some of that 10% performance delta.

Oh god 800mhz ram? Yeah if anything get that up to 1333, I think that's the highest non-Z boards support.

Unfortunately that Lenovo board has MINIMUM settings in the BIOS. Everything pretty much has to run on stock.

rma yr 1080? and you should be fine just get a nice aio cooler and oc that cpu and yr ram (or buy faster ram if u dont want to oc yr ram)

Yeah I would say at least get a better motherboard to try to overclock those ram speeds
As for your build, the Crystal series cases look pretty but really suck when it comes to silent performance. There are gaps between all of the sides since they're all glass so sound just travels right out.

Actually your RAM is running at 1600MHz. Programs display 800MHz instead of 1600MHz. Like on my PC it show 666MHz or 667MHz, when in reality it's 1333MHz.

Do you need 32gb ram? If not, just get 2x8gb sticks.

 

And if you do need it, get 2x16gb. It won't hurt performance, should cost a little less, and gives you better upgradibility.

the ram is 1600mhz but it think the board dont support it

Yeah, but that's still slow enough to show some differences in games/benchmarks.

Yeah I use RAM heavy applications like Photoshop with a zillion layers and 3d apps like z-brush and 3ds max so 32GB is a must.

You are correct!, CPU-Z reports only base frequency without the 2x multiplier, so in fact its 1600 Hz 

(you can tell I havent done this in a while)
