Should I get a cheap USB C cable on eBay or spend a bit more on amazon? My main question is if the eBay ones will be bad and possibly break my new Nintendo switch.

I'd go Amazon tbh...

It's a cable, it won't break your Switch, even if it were to short or something.

Buying on Amazon is not a guarantee, unless you order items sold by and fulfilled by Amazon themselves. So much cheap rubbish and fake/imported from China electronics on Amazon, it's just a a marketplace for third party sellers, much like eBay.

Does you mum know you're here?

Normally I would say any cable will do. But USB Type-C passes a lot of current, and faulty wiring can break your device (phone, tablet, laptop, or in your case Switch). I would buy from a trusted company only over Amazon. At least until few years where protection system on devices can be made to account all issues, and cable is cheaper to make that skimming on making a cable properly wont be needed, and therefore not be an issue for consumers.

It has been shown that having a crappy USB Type-C cable can break devices. Google was going approving USB Type-C cables after they found out that many, at the time, were crap and DID (not may.. did) damage their Chromebooks, Anker did a recall on their first/early USB cable where the internal chip in the plug was keeping in memory the last high powered device voltage and can break a device if the cable is used with another device. And yes, they are reports of people complaining about how the USB Type-C cable, if used for charging, broke their device.

You want any USB-C with 56k ohm resistors.

56k is the standard for USB-C yet companies are still using 10k resistors because that was Micro USB I think.

If you use 10k resistor USB-C on any phone that can charge higher than 2.4AMPS then (i.e. QC3.0):

1) Charger will die,

2) Phone's Charging port will die,

3) Phone will Die

4) 1+2

5) 1+2+3
