Project Cu - a custom PC desk

Hi :)

This is my first post on linustechtips.com.

At the moment I'm working on a custom, watercooled desk PC. The theme will be black with copper accents like the watercooling pipes and other components.

I've already started with making the desk and buying the components. It's a slow but steady work in progress.

I thought I'd share some sketchup images of the project with you, together with some build log photo's.

Parts list:

Components

i7 6700k

EVGA gtx 1080 SC

ASROCK Z170 Extreme 7+

16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 3200MHz

Corsair RM850i (Will make custom cables myself)

Samsung 850 EVO (I've not decided on how much storage and how many drives)

(Water)cooling

EK FC-1080 (The 1070 version doesn't have a copper version)

EK Supremacy EVO Copper/plexi

EK-res X3 400

Alphacool NexXos UT60 radiator

Alphacool VPP655 PWM + Eisdecke D5 plexi

Corsair SP120 fans

Nanoxia Coolforce CF1 fittings

This is the top-view of the model, as you can see not all the parts are added in the sketchup model because that would be too much work. It's just to get an idea of the model.

As I already stated, the desk will be black with copper accents.

Here are some pictures of the progress of the desk itself.

Here I'm cutting the base of the desk.

Complete base of the desk finished!

Gluing some wooden parts together for more strength. The part in the back is made so that the air coming out of the PSU won't enter the cable management space.

Cutting a hole in the back for the exhaust of the psu.

This is as far as I've come now. Cable management space is finished.

Next thing will be to buy and cut the plastic tubes for the cable management. After that I'll position all the PC parts where they need to go and drill holes where I need to.

Stay tuned!

Wow, this looks really cool!

By the way, what kind of wood are you using?

Thanks mate!

I'm using regular MDF wood. Easy to work with and quite cheap!

Will paint it black when everything is in it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Time for another update!

I've worked on the woodwork for the desk.

Here I've drilled holes where the plastic tubes for the cable management will go through.

IMG_0585.JPG

After some (a lot) of filing because I didn't have the right sized saw tool, it seems like a perfect fit!

IMG_0587.JPG

Test fitted where the mobo and gpu will go, this seems like a good division of the space.

IMG_0589.JPG

After the test fitting I marked off the rear I/O and cut a space where all the connectors will go through. This space will need to be adjusted in height once the standoffs are installed.

IMG_0595.JPG

Now it's time to attach the middle board to the base. This will be glued in place aswell if everything is finished and ready to paint.

IMG_0592.JPG

I also made some mounting points for the psu.

IMG_0590.JPG

This is how it will become, psu (hot) air will be exhausted out the back of the desk.

IMG_0593.JPG

Next I marked the holes for the mounting points of the mobo and drilled holes (not through the whole thickness of the base, just

for some ''screws'' that have a thread inside.

IMG_0597.JPG

IMG_0599.JPG

Next, time to screw in the standoffs.

IMG_0600.JPG

That's it for this update. I don't have a lot of time on my hands to work on this but I'll do my best to keep updating it regularly! I'm really excited about how this project will turn out!

Lovely stuff; I like the sewage pipes. :D The little things with screw thread inside and out are a nice solution too, though I'm always afraid the standoffs will get stuck in them and I'd pull the entire assembly out of the wood...

It's also nice to have yet another Dutchie here, of course. There's actually a thread called "Dutch Talk" in the Off Topic section where we get together, speak Dutch and plot world domination ( :P ), if you wish to check that out...

Thanks for the reply!

The good thing is I'm able to just screw them back out if I wish to. They won't stay stuck bc both threads screw in the same way. Even if the standoff would not come out, I could screw the standoffs and the other thing out together.

Also, thanks for the heads up! Will definitely check out the thread!?

Some people can see them because the images are cached for a fairly long time.

When you edited the other post, did you click the delete button on the attachments in the attach zone at the bottom of the editor? If so, I'm afraid that, as far as I know, it deletes them permanently from the server, even though there are other posts that are using them. I have reported this to the devs before, but clearly it's not been fixed. This appears to have been fixed, so I'm not sure why it still appears to have occurred. Could you PM me with everything that you did?

If you upload them again, it should work.

(if you want to respond, probably best to do it via PM so the thread doesn't get filled with troubleshooting this issue)
