what is it going to be used for? you dont just have a "server", a server is something you dedicate to a task and is made for that task. while it may do sevral tasks it can not do all of them and thats why we need to know what you need your server for

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

"Here is some advice that might have gotten lost somewhere along the way in your life.

#1. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

#2. It's best to keep your mouth shut; and appear to be stupid, rather than open it and remove all doubt.

#3. There is nothing "wrong" with being wrong. Learning from a mistake can be more valuable than not making one in the first place.

because the software that i use does not allow me to accesses it if i save it to an external hard drive, not even a usb so i need to save it, in one reliable place accessible anywhere

Something like DropBox sounds like it would serve your needs better.

these are confidential records i would rather use my own server

than you should simply encrypt the files before you upload them to dropbox, in terms of reliability almost any known cloud provider will be better than having a single server at home.
