I am thinking about buying this old server on ebay I found for $60, and I was wondering if I could turn it into a dedicated minecraft server, with a custom ip and all. How would I do that? Any other thoughts? besides that minecraft is for dumb 8 year olds?

I think you'd just install Linux or Windows, and run the free Minecraft Server application. I'm not sure about custom IP, but there are some great youtube videos on that.

i5 6600k and GTX 1070 but I play 1600-900. 1440p BABY!

Still, don't put too much faith in my buying decisions. xD

Those servers are extremely old and will run a MC server worse than your laptop.

Don't waste your money. Run the server on your PC or buy a proper server that isn't a decade old.

what if I buy an oldish pc and upgrade it a bit more... would that work? I mean I want the server to be up (almost) 24/7. My budget is under $100 if anyone can find anything else

Do you not already have a PC?

Yes it will run a minecraft server though it wont support many people also it doesnt come with a hard drive so you'll have to buy one separately

well am I supposed to run minecraft in the background on my main rig all the time?

It will run better than on a crappy $100 computer, so why not?

extra hdd on your desktop,

But for a server, just cause i can. you can network boot the sucker.

so now your adding latency ontop of a slow machine to host a server... good to know

note really. Most of all the files are on ram anyways, and the network drive can be faster than a internal hdd.

though a warning to optimally run it your going to have to use a headless linux install so it will take some learning if you don't already know about it
