WTF R9 290X Coil Whine!!

lhikari

Coil whine can occur on ANY card & ANY power supply.

I've had Corsair AX1200i's produce horrible coil whine, just like i had a Titan with a my Windforce Cooler.

Some specific components are more vulnerable to it, EG Corsair CX500/600 & Silverstone 550w G

Linus made a video about coil whine its just plain bad luck. Its either the gpu by itself or just a bad combo with ur psu model.

RMA it.

Coil whine is not usually specific to a single card type or manufacture.

Ive had a few cards do this and i rma them and the next card did not do it.

have had

260 core 216 from EVGA that did it RMA fixed issue.

8800GTX evga  that did it only 1 of a pair in SLI.

My Gigabyte OC 7970 Used to do it early on, not really loud enough though to really be noticed and then it quit doing it after a few weeks of benching on that card.

Have heard of cards from both sides in every single generation having this issue.

some 7990's had it really bad for instance my guess is similar issue to my 7970 but times 2 lol perhaps they too would have went away after use.

I think its luck of the draw and then if its horrible RMA it if its bearable with side on case it may even clear up or it may get worse just keep a eye on it and your warranty expire date. .

Have had PSU's do this too from all different brands .

Asrock X670E Steel Legend - AMD 7600X(5.5Ghz) -  XFX Speedster-Zero EKWB Edition 6900XTXH

-32GB Kingston Fury Beast 6000mhz DDR5 - WB Black 1 & 2 TB NVME -EVGA 1300W G2

my r9 290x whining ;______________;

You can generally RMA cards if they coil whine badly.

Regardless of what graphics card you buy, I think this is always a possibility. I had an older GTX card that was passively cooled that developed that after a year or so.

To the people saying oh its an XFX problem or my gigabyte one doesnt have coil whine...

You know they are all reference design and just have a different branding? Nothing else is a different, not all cards coil whine, not everyone is running the same configuration

780s have coil whine too.

Seriously? Cloud Gate? This benchmark is pushing the card to produce like 4000FPS, it is completely normal for it to whine. Lock it by V-Sync and it goes off. My Classy whines too during these Cloud Gate and Ice Storm tablets/notebooks benchmarks, but during Firestrike or normal gaming, no coil whine at all.

wtf is this

alot of ppl are complaining about it

im getting one this week :( will i have coil whine on my thermaltake 550w 80 plus bronze psu?

This is the reason why I wont recommend the 290x or the 290 to anyone. They run too hot, they make too much noise and the fact that they need so much airflow and they still run at 95oC to me is just a barrage of warning bells. Cancel your order and buy a 780 if you can, if not get a 680 classified or a 680 FTW they will be cheaper than a 770 and they will be on the higher end of the scale (680 and 770 are essentially the same cards) as the FTW or classified are on the higher end of the range of their respective cards

Have a Sapphire card, can confirm this doesn't happen on Sapphire.

I got a Sapphire BF4 Edition and mine has coil whine....but nowhere near as bad as that video. Playing BF4 I heard more of a buzzing noise rather then a high pitch constant squeal. But when I played Napoleon total war, I had some high pitch sound....after 30-45min it was giving me kind of a headache....cuz all I could hear in one ear was like a ringing (as if I just left a loud club). I am sending it for RMA, getting a refund. I moved my PC from on my desk to the floor and that lessened the sound, but I could still hear it a bit

I purchased another Sapphire, but non-bf4 edition. Hopefully, I get one that doesn't have it.

I'll say this though, that I could really only hear it at first when playing a game or putting load....once the fan RPMs went up, the fan noise washed out the coil whine...but I could still hear it if I put my head near the top of the case.

However I got a 290x block so therefore wont have a fan to drown it out, that's why I decided to RMA....I don't wanna hear that shit constantly....didn't pay that much money to deal with something like that and no be happy with it.

I don't care if its something that happens with GFX cards now, you shouldn't be getting that when you spend that kind of money.

Wrong, while they may all be to reference designed PC's does NOT mean they are all using the exact same quality componentry. An example with the 290x's was some manufacturers were using elpida memory and some where using hand, generally the habit was of much better quality and over clocked much further (general consensus).
