Razer Core. Your PC needs to have Thunderbolt 3

I was watching some of linus's old videos, and I saw this thing that you can plug into a laptop, to put a good gpu in it. Does that ring a bell to anyone? What's that thing called?

It won't have the bandwidth needed for a GPU.

No. From what I gather it would be limited to 1x speeds.

No, usb 3.0 is only 5Gb, 3.1 gen 2 is 10Gb now and I believe the new thunderbolt is 40? I could be wrong though. You need thunderbolt 3 though.

No, Thunderbolt 3 has 8x the bandwidth of USB 3.0. USB just can't handle that much data going back and forth. If your laptop doesn't have Thunderbolt 3 and isn't compatible with the Alienware Graphics Amp, you're out of luck unless you do some wonky custom enclosure build.

Ha, yes it's the Razor Core.

a VERY expensive toy. USB adapters won't work, my understanding is that without Thunderbolt it won't even be detected, even if it is you wouldn't get the full performance benefits, so would be a VERY VERY VERY expensive paperweight.

not just Razer Core for eGPU

there's many, many GPU thunderbolt docks that are significantly cheaper than that overpriced box, like the BizonBox.

if you don't have thunderbolt, you can use MiniPCIe for an x1 2.0 link and then use compression for 8Gbps, ExpressCard for the same, and I've seen x4 3.0 over M.2 PCI-E.

idk

wait PCI-E to TB for $90? Because PCI-E over USB is impossible, but I've seen PCI over USB

There's no way on this earth you find that. An actual Razer Core?

You can and have been able to do it without the razor core for a long time but it's a bit DIY here's a random video explaining it also I'm sure you can get these adapters for much cheaper.

I own one, GDC Beast is unstable compared to PE3L or some other ID from BPlusTech. Drivers just crash occasionally for no reason. Works fine with Windows once you use Clover to allow for PCI memory allocation.

idk
