Strange connector in the bottom of this laptop?

This is on the bottom of my dad's workstation laptop. It's a Dell Precision 7510. But what in the world is that connector? Pcie?

So what does the dock do? External gpu, storage, etc? Projector? Or all of the above?

as far as i know, the concept is mostly for "office folks" that have their laptop plugged into a whole bunch of stuff (keyboard, mouse, extra displays, power, and so on) when at their desk, but have to be able to "pick it up and leave" without much hassle.

Was very useful with my lenovo, good to just be able to pick it up and piss off when needed. What didn't help was it being a shitty thinkpad with vista that couldn't multitask.

Mine was a 'solution' to a problem, that problem was the company I was at decided it was time to upgrade from 2000, and the citrix client for remote access didn't play nice with vista. So apparently the answer to a software bug at the time was 500million worth of new hardware....
