Whats better for eGPU solution? running 1440p and potentially 4K Sea Hawk Gforce GTX 1070 or XFX R9-FURY-4QFA (both water cooled)

The cards are both watercooled and I'm impartial on red vs green so which card is better? 1070 is $100 CAD more but double RAM and newer gen.  Also heard 1070's are tech current 1440p champ but I am curious.

Thunderbolt 3 eGPU, I can live with %10-20 drop in performance

Well thats just bad ass. If you are hell bent on water cooler then I'd get the 1070. It's faster in general and I really have not heard much about how AMD cards work over Thunderbolt 3. If you don't care that much about water cooling then I think a 1080 would be similar in price.

I live in Canada, a new 1080 is starts at about $780 and climbs quickly.  From what I've heard a 1080 is wasted on eGPU setups because of the limited bandwidth.  A decent air cooled 1070 run around $550

Are you using an external monitor? Because as far as I'm aware, only Nvidia cards will power the internal display.

RAM: 16GB DDR4 | CPU: Ryzen 3750H | GPU: GTX 1660ti

Well the 1070 is roughly 15-20% better in performance and uses less power overall. Also having a r9 fury (non x) the 4gb does lock out settings on a few games, I also play pretty much only at 1440p and haven't had issues pushing consistent 60fps...well besides bf1 multiplayer, but that's related to my cpu not the gpu.

Silent build - You know your pc is too loud when the deaf complain. Windows 98 gaming build, smells like beige

I'll be using both an external display (currently running a basic 1920x1080p @60Hz) or the laptop screen (up to 3840x2160 @48Hz)

I'll likely buy a 1440p @75-144Hz ultrawide around he same time I get the eGPU setup.

You also realise that the Fury isn;t on the compatability list for the akitio? Not saying it wont work, but something to research first.

No, thanks for the tip!  I was mostly curious because I'm not very familiar with AMD and while I like the 1070 a more budget card would be welcome

The bandwidth of a Thunderbolt 3 connection is about PCIE 2.0 8X which doesn't affect performance nearly as much. Most of that performance drop off is due to overhead and not the bandwidth of the card. Get the 1070. It's faster and cooler.

And it looks glorious :D

I think I can wait until Vega launches and maybe get some sales (unlikely I know) or snag whatever the 1070 equivalent is.  ATM I can run pretty much everything I want to - Revit, Overwatch and hopefully For Honor on the integrated 970m
