I was thinking about getting an Asus Radeo RX 480 STRIX card to go with the ROG Maximus viii hero alpha. I really dont know alot about graphics cards, so input would be great. Is that overkill? I have heard good reviews and it matches the aesthetics of my build.

ASUS makes good cards, the cooler on that one is said to be very quiet and efficient. Make sure the card fits into your case though, because in my case it wouldn't so I got the Sapphire version.

Just why? Get a cheaper Z270 board and a GTX 1070!

aus generally makes good quality, but they're a bit weird...

asus products generally have a bit of a price premium applied to them, but with that they make sure they dont cheap out. they dont go "overkill" like for example asrock likes doing with the VRMs on their motherboard, but they certainly dont cut corners either.

their software team.. has the best of intentions.. but that stuff is SO BUGGY... dont "expect" aitweaker or asus aura to work out the box, see it as a bonus if they do :P

that said, i found this guy that's quite hype about the RX480 strix:

Ive checked the case and MOBO for size/compatibility and everything looks good there. And overkill was just asking if the card was way higher or lower quality for the board. It will be an i5 6700K processor.

The GPU is not bad, but if you are going to spend $500 on your motherboard and less than $250 on your GPU, I would strongly advise you to rethink your priorities

6700k is an i7 not an i5.

Motherboards have pci-express 3.0 , so doesn't change anything which gpu you put in. It more depends on the cpu to make sure the cpu is strong enuff for the gpu.

With a 6700k you can pair it with any gpu, that cpu is a beast...

I agree with PC GUY , If I was you, I would get a cheaper motherboard to get a gtx 1070 for the same price or almost,

You would get better performance :P

same thing anyway, not an i7 but still a pretty good CPU that you can match with any high end gpu.

That said, why would you buy such a high end motherboard ? Do you really need the options ? you know that the motherboard will not give you any better performance than a standard 150$ mobo right ?

Suggestions from others mainly :/ But im starting to think that they have very deep pockets lol. The main thing I want is full ATC form and a M.2 Slot

Yep. I thought that it was an other motherboard xD

But, still, for just $25 more, you can get almost double the performance!

I appreciate the options. I am definitely starting spending more than I thought I would, but if youre going to do something, do it right!

Are there any cards that are slightly cheaper than the 1070 without sacrificing a ton? If I can shave off a little more cash it would speed up my build time (Buying a little here and there) Really all I need are these 3 parts (Saving the most important for last)

Not really. But a 1070 starts at $380....

Dude, for gaming I would really recommend getting the 1070, you can skim down on other things, but the GPU is the heart of a gaming rig. rather look for a cheaper motherboard with all the features you want with less extras than shave all the way down to a 1060 / RX 480 vs the 1070. The 1070 is a beast of a card and mine runs super cool to boot, I have the Asus Strix 1070 and it runs at 65 Celsius during summer in a hot country like South Africa with the fan speed only going up to 45% (this with an overclock on the core to 2.1 GHz)
