might be a tad little, go and use a wattage calculator to find out if you can do it

http://images10.newegg.com/BizIntell/tool/psucalc/index.html

they dont have 290 as an option, so i guessed it would be similar to a 7970, and came to 530W

it should be fine.

is your CPU overclocked? are you planing to OC the GPU?

cpu is very lightly overclocked, gpu will not be overclocked

cpu is very lightly overclocked, gpu will not be overclocked

then it should be fine the CPU will pull about 100w at the max OC, and lets say GPU pulls just about 300w(that is what linus said that the 290x used) at the max that is still less than 550. its borderline but not bad.

you should be good but i recommend getting at least a 600w PSU as soon as you can.

hard disks and other things are negligible.

Ehh Bet thing when it comes to Power supplies is to not meet the reqs for the system wattage. Say your build uses 500 wats exactly and you have a 500 watt psu... its going to be working its butt off to keep the system up. If you get a 800 watt PSU you can give the Psu some room to breathe and also have space to had things in down the line.

OP, what else you got in your system? Are you planning to watercool the CPU or GPU? Are you going to overclock/overvolt the GPU? If not, then that 550W PSU should be fine.

If you are at all unsure, just knock it up 100 watts. Works for me.

How does this matter here? Irrespective of efficiency, any decent 550W PSU will supply 550W of power to the system.

In case it's some crappy PSU with horrible efficiency (the ones that come with $20 cases for example)

I think you may have confused PSU efficiency- bad efficiency only means the PSU will draw more from the socket to provide the 550W to the system. But yes, no one should cheap out on a PSU.
