Display Port > DVI > VGA.

My display port to VGA adapter doesn't have the 4 pins around the flat piece. I don't need sound or anything. (It's going to my projector)

If you are plugging into a DVI-D port, yes. Those 4 pins carry the analogue signal for DVI-I (or passive DVI to VGA adaptors)

So if it's going from dvi d (my case it's dual link) I can?

The extra four pins are what carry the VGA signal. You need them for the adapter to work.

DVI to VGA adapters do not work in pure DVI ports, they only work in special DVI + VGA combo ports called DVI-I.

The DisplayPort to DVI adapter just gives you a regular DVI port since it is assumed you will use it to connect to a DVI monitor, not VGA. Since it is not a DVI/VGA combo port, just a regular pure DVI port, it is intentionally designed without holes for those four pins so that you cannot plug DVI to VGA adapters into it, because they will not work.

If you want to connect to VGA, just get a DisplayPort to VGA adapter, they are very inexpensive.
