Samsung 960 EVO vs PRO?

Go to solution Solved by RadiatingLight,

I would go for the EVO.

PRO has a longer warranty, longer MTBF, and better read/write speeds, but IOPS are essentially the same, so you won't notice any difference unless you are copying hundreds of gigabytes.

Realistically would I be able to see any real world performance improvements between these two SSDs? Im building a super high performance small form factor PC and if there isn't a noticeable benefit to going with the PRO, i'd just save the money and buy an EVO. Capacity is 500GB if that matters.

Difference in price doesnt justify the diff in performance. I ended up just getting a 960evo.

Get the EVO. The Pro isn't worth $80 more...

It's not about capacity, im looking specifically for an NVME M.2 2280 spec drive. That's a sata III.

The main benifit of the Pro version is the MLC NAND flash over the TLC stuff on the EVO which helps with durability (number of writes) if you are going to really hammer your drive. In most cases the regular EVO is more than enough for regular users.

No big deal. The MX300 has an M.2 2880 version for almost nothing more. http://pcpartpicker.com/product/RKhj4D/crucial-mx300-11tb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-ct1050mx300ssd4

The difference between the M.2 960 EVO and MX300 2.5 is negligible to the vast majority of users. The difference between either of those and that hard drive? Colossal. Don't pretend that the jump from an MX300 to a 960 EVO is even close to the improvements you get when you go from a 7200RPM HDD to an MX300. Sure, the MX300 might have 1/4th the write speeds on paper, but it's already so fast that a much faster SSD won't make a night-and-day difference - nowhere near the upgrade from an HDD to any modern SSD. 500-600 MB/s is still incredibly fast.

Capacity determines the amount of data you can store on an SSD for faster access, and the amount of programs you can install on an SSD for faster launch times. If you're a gamer and want to play triple-A titles, you can probably have about five installed on a 500GB SSD, with not a ton of space left over for other programs. Keeping 20% capacity free is a general rule of thumb to avoid choking the performance of your drive. If you want to store media in addition to that, you'll need to invest in a mass-storage solution; an HDD.

However, a 1TB drive is more than enough for a lot of things. I have weeks of recorded lossless audio from my rehearsals and audition tapes, six games installed, one of which is a heavily modded SKyrim, several editing programs, and a lot of stored video rips (backups from my DVD collection), as well as a gargantuan 80GB music library of over 7,000 songs. 500GB is definitely a point where you can manage without another drive, but a 1TB drive essentially ensures that, unless you plan to have a ton of 4k video footage on hand at all times or something similar.

The one you linked is also a Sata interface drive, not NVME.

Indeed. If the interface is that important to you, then sure, get the EVO. The benefits of the Pro are that its NAND is configured to run in MLC, which is far better for longevity. MLC can withstand more write cycles, as there are less packets of data per cell at a time. More on this here-

That being said, the improvement in performance isn't anything to write home about.

I know that it's a SATA interface drive. My point was to highlight the benefits of a higher capacity drive over a superior interface and better performance.

I'm aware. However, it's still more than fast enough for the vast majority of users, and provides twice the capacity at the same price - less if you compare it to the 960 Pro. The purpose of my post was to highlight the advantages of that much more capacity.

I linked the M.2 MX300 SSD in case he needed it in that form factor specifically.
