Got The Itch To Learn How To Code/Program

Fellow Techies,

I hope y'all are doing well. I am new to this area of LLT and new to Programing. I watched a few videos of people doing so serious $h!t with coding and programming and got a little bit of an itch now. I am a full time student and stay decently busy but I get a couple of hours free here and there.

 

Where and what is good place to start learning. What is the difference between coding and programming? I am not great at teaching myself but I can do so if given lots of free time. If someone can at least point in the right direction I will be most grateful. Thanks a bunch.

If you have zero experience with programming, I would suggest codeacademy.com which teaches the core concepts of coding.

Coding is typing the code out. Programming is knowing what you're doing.

 

I'd also get a basic understanding of how computers work in the lower levels. Understanding the machine in how it works helps you understand why programs do what they do. Or at least that's what I hope anyway.

 

Also it's best to learn programming concepts. If you understand the concepts, you can pick up most languages fairly quickly.

 I got into programming through an interest in electronics. I was trying to find something you are interested in but nursing isn't really something related to programming

Kinda backfired huh? No worries man, I say it with love. In all truthfulness I am going for nursing. However, I grew up with dad running a computer/networking consulting, building, maintenance, and engineering company doing both residential and commercial. I learned a thing or two through the years but he was never really a great teacher (it was mostly through watching and listening) and he hated writing code and creating software.... he was good at it, but hated doing it. He is no longer living so I have no teacher. So I understand some things just not everything. Programming is something I don't know how to do and would like to at least get my feet wet. I thank yall for chiming in and giving me some advice.

Coursera,

iTunesU,

YouTube (look for high view counts and good production quality, read comments/questions/responses to see how clear the producer is being)

 

As for picking a language, start with one of the declaratives like C++/Java/C#/Swift.

I started to learn coding at FreeCodeCamp.com. 

It has been great. Also remember to reference books when you don't understand anything. 

If you want to learn some HTML CSS and javascript, I can link you some websites and books that I found to help me a lot when I was learning. 

 

If you did not have any experience at all, HTML and CSS is a good place to jump in, follow those things, you can learn a real language like javascript. 

 

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

I made a list that contains books/websites/youtube tutorials that I found it useful. 

It can be difficult at times and coding definitely will get you scratching your head. So, be prepared.

I would suggest learning C language first learn the good ole non-object oriented programming first then move onto object oriented, but if you like to jump right into classes and objects then Java and C++ are great to begin with.
