CPU as potential bottleneck

Go to solution Solved by Guest Kloaked,

The video cards would run in x8 while in SLI. It's fine.

Hi there

I'm planning on building a new rig with a i7 6700k and two GTX 1080s.

Now my question regarding the CPU:

I've recently watched a video where Linus explained how different processors support different amounts of PCIe lanes.

Worried that my i7 would bottleneck my Graphic Cards I had a look at Intels Ark website.

And indeed the i7 6700k only supports up to 16 PCIe lanes instead of the 32 I think I would need for two PCIe x16 Cards.

Now, did I misunderstand something? And if not is this a "big" bottleneck?

I thank you in advance for all your answers!

wouldn't that have some impact on performance?

no. 8x is PLENTY for a super high end GPU.

right but they are behind DMI and are already used by other I/O.

It's extremely minimal. I think PugetSystems did either a video or article about it but I CBA to find it. The impact on your frame rate is literally so minute and inconsistent that it doesn't even matter.
