Can Ping affect In-game FPS?

La_Basura

So, I barely got my PC not too long ago, so I'm fairly new to the PC scene. I bought Titanfall 2 to finally enjoy next gen graphics on high/ultra settings. I play on a 720p monitor so it doesn't use all 6gb of VRAM. The campaign ran smooth never getting drastic frame drops and getting a constant 100 frames. However, multiplayer was a whole different story destroying my FPS and getting around 70-90 FPS but getting drops as low as to 18 FPS. My ping is around 60-100 and I'm wondering if this might be a networking issue?

it might be... is your connection wired or wireless?

No. Ping is your connection to the server. If you have a high ping, it could cause lag. FPS is the number of frames your gpu can display onto the monitor. These two go hand and hand for a smooth experience, but do not bottleneck each other

No. Ping would cause the game to disconnect at the higher numbers, but Hz should remain untouched.

Ah, alright. Damn, I'm wondering what could be causing this bad performance... well, anyways, thank you guys for responding. I asked the same question over there in graphics cards and they said it shouldn't be my graphics card and possibly a networking issue. Alright, maybe I'll look toward another forum to ask my question. Thanks guys!

Check the router settings. Did anything change without your knowing. Check for any priority rules.

The server tells the computer where to draw, so if your connection is crap your computer won't be drawing much of anything. This is why lag happens with high ping rates. The game is waiting to be told what to draw and most importantly where to draw it.

I don't quite think it's crap. But could my ping drastically affect it that bad?

I was being general, didn't mean that your connection itself was crap. Ping, in the 500+ range can really make things difficult, but in the 60 to 100 range it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Titanfall 2 on a 720p monitor. My Rig: gtx 1060 6gb 6gt oc, I7-6700k 4.0ghz, and 16gb RAM. I'm not sure what you mean by up and down speed ?

Upload and download speed, you can get this from speedtest.net or any other speed test website.

Definitely not a speed limitation then and the rig is great. Benchmarks show it can run Titanfall 2 at 1080p on very high and averaged 80FPS, heck you could probably bump it up to 1440p at average around 55 FPS on very high.

Hmmmm, this might be a far off question to ask but my OS, windows 10 64 bit, isn't activated for some reason. Could that possibly effect my gaming experience by any chance?

Not really. Is Titanfall 2 able to go through the firewall or anti-virus?

Anti-virus could affect game performance? but I'm not quite sure. I have McAfee Total Protection by the way.

I would install MSI Afterburner and, using the OSD, monitor the usage of the CPU and GPU over the long-term. It could be normal behavior due to the engine and not your specs.

You have a 1060, unless you need to install the drivers (or some other basic task that was overlooked), you should have a fine fps @ 720p and ultra settings.

Ping will cause lag though, lag does not equal fps. what you are probably seeing is lag spikes, where things rubber banding over the place/jitter etc.

As a general rule of thumb ping will not affect fps, unless the developer sucks and holds the draw call till the server responds...
