You'll need to burn it as a DVD-Video disc in order to play it back on most DVD players, unless they support reading raw MP4 files. You can use programs like Nero, ConvertXtoDVD, or Sony Vegas to do this.

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, 5060 Ti) Mobile: Moto Razr 50 Ultra (Razr+ 2024) | 30GB CAN+US+MEX $30/month
Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 7i (16") 82UF0015US (i7-12700H, 16GB/2TB RAM/SSD, A370M GPU) Tablet: Lenovo Tab Plus (256GB)
Camera: Canon M6 Mark II | Canon Rebel T1i (500D) | Canon SX280 Music: Spotify Premium (CIRCA '08)

Buy DVD-R disks, they're super cheap. You can't use CDs.

If it's Windows 7, just open Windows DVD maker. If it's windows 10, download Freemake, open the file and select the output as DVD.

Actually you're incorrect. A DVD Player honestly doesn't give a shit whether the medium is a CD or a DVD, as long as it's authored properly into the correct format. You'll just get far less video (Something like 20 minutes or 30 minutes?) onto the CD. This is because of the VCD standard, which basically any player that reads DVD will also support.

Now with that in mind, unless the clips are very short, I would also advise against CD's. If he has both, or has neither (and thus needs to buy some), getting DVD's is the better option anyway.

i mean... it's a lot easier with a portable dvd player than a clunky laptop or a tablet with limited storage

If we're talking car or train ride, I'd straight up take the laptop instead, if it were me. Or grab a tablet w/ MicroSD expansion, or one that supports playing video off of a USB hard drive/flash drive.

i have nowhere to charge the laptop, with a limited battery life, and my tablet is an ipad 2

What is the capacity of your iPad 2? Because unless you plan on burning a dozen DVD's, you may well be able to just compress the video files tighter using something like Handbrake, and then drop them on your iPad. You could bring the laptop with you to periodically load new content onto the iPad if you watched it all, as that wouldn't take much battery life. There are ways to keep the laptop charged (buy an Inverter) or attach a USB drive to the ipad (using the Camera Connection kit), but these cost money.

Anyway if you're dead set on using DVD's, there have been some good suggestions above.
