I read a post a while ago on how to save x data when you plugged the usb to the pc.

So it's possible ( i did it myself and it worked ) but I couldn't find it

would be possible with autorun but Microsoft took it out of all Windows OSes through an update in 2010/11

just make an encrypted volume and keep the password to yourself

idk

you don'T understand, this is a very valuable thumb drive.

I need people to give it back in the case that I loose it or forget it.

I'm finding it hard to believe that building a device to get information on other peoples computer could help you protect your own, unless your plan is to protect your USB drives, in which case, you have files on USB drives that shouldn't be there.

If you really just wanted to protect your own USB drives you would have asked if it was possible to disable the drive when plugged in and certain conditions weren't met. Instead you asked how to send you information about another computer without the user finding out. This is not the place to learn how to break the law for personal amusement or gain.

its neither of the two. people have a tendency to steal drives in my college. and use them (say you are in a multimedia class and you have a grade that depends on your classmates grades. lower theirs and higher yours, the better. would be a shame if someone lost their project.)

if I get the ip / location. perhaps the name of the pc, considering people put their own name usually. I could figure out who did it. and not only get the key back, but bring them to the school's authority.

in order for someone to be "stolen" info from, they would have to steal from me in the first place.

As my stepmom used to say (and it was very annoying) two wrongs don't make a right.

Most likely the Uniwill can you both for engaging in questionable activities. I still think that the best solution is to try to find a way to disable or block the device if it's not you using it, rather than what you are attempting to do.

I am the only person allowed to use it. but I want people to be able to bring it back / me know where it is.

Something doesn't follow here. You want to track who has it, but you are the only person who's supposed to have it. You want people to be able to bring it back, yet you are the only person who's supposed to have it.

Perhaps the simplest solution is to PROTECT YOUR SHIT in the first place, rather than breaking the law in an attempt to get recompense after failing to protect you and yours. I still maintain that the best solution to the alleged problem (let me be clear, I do not believe that you are telling the truth about your intentions at all) is to prevent other people from getting the USB drive, and failing that, prevent them from being able to interact with the files thereon.

I can't always be at the computer, and if say I leave for the bathroom (during the common pauses) its easy to steal.

but most of the time I can't remove the drive.

instead of going around the problem, can you help me fix it ?

Well, avoiding the problem altogether is the best solution if that is a possible alternative, and in this case it is. However, since you asked, here is an option that meets my requirements of ethics, and your requirements of protecting your files.

USB Safeguard

It allows you to password protect your files on removable media.

I think you are confused about what the purpose of protecting is, you can just encrypt your drive and back it all up, but instead you are going towards the agressive route of "I AM GONNA CATCH THIS SCUMBAG"

I always remove my drive before I go somewhere. Providing the drive uses a fat32 file system, If you have documents open on the drive but no program is actively reading from the drive, it is completely safe to just yank it out. When you plug it back in, press 'save' on all the open windows so the applications can re-assign their file handle locks. On Linux just make sure you unmount first.
