5 Year CPU Plan

Would spending the extra 20 USD make my rig last longer through overclocking and the higher base clock, or would it be better placed somewhere else?

Yes spend the extra twenty the overclocking will help extend the cpu's ability to preform well over a longer span of time.

For my first desktop, I am considering purchasing either a i5 7600 or an i5 7600k.

I have no past experience choosing processors, and I am planning for this build to last me through college (or the next 5 years).

Would spending the extra 20 USD make my rig last longer through overclocking and the higher base clock, or would it be better placed somewhere else? Any suggestions are welcome.

Rest of planned rig so far:

Hi,

if you plan to get a 7600, definitely go for the 7600K.

Windows 10 Pro's extra features are a dubious value at best to the general consumer.

You could get a Z270 motherboard with onboard Wifi for the same price as the MSI one you listed.

Also DEFINITELY get an SSD for your OS drive. It's DAY and NIGHT difference.

Might as well, I see plenty of people picking non-OC CPUs and then regretting it later because they want to have fun trying to OC.

I ended up getting a K SKU processor and a H series mobo, then realising and returning it and buying a Z seris board.

i'm an idiot

idk

I'd wait and see what ryzen has to offer personally.. but if you can't wait and definite;y want a z270 board for features, then spend the extra for the K CPU too, you will not regret it at all. And if this is for a 5 year plan, then the overclocking will help make it a competitor for that time frame you have in mind. You might need a good cooler though, so factor that in too, if not now then for later.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.
