Hey guys! Well I made it here. I have been watching Linus since his blond hair days at NCIX! You are THE REASON I stopped watching Paul on Newegg and started building my own rigs! Look at you guys now. Jesus H Christ that makes me realize how old I am now. Anyways, I really hope you will answer my question. I am NOT what you would call a "techie" . I do build my own rigs though, and I don't do so without watching your videos, because you give great advice on the products no matter what the budget. So finally to my question. I don't see you guys do a lot with MSI products. Is there a reason for that, or did I miss a video I should have watched? Any answers would be really cool. Thanks.

Just to try and help I have a personal preference to not use MSI. I've done six builds over the past few years and 3 of those have failed on me. Those 3 were MSI while the ones that worked were Asus and Gigabyte. My latest build started out with the M5 Gaming board by MSI with the MSI Gaming 1070 card. Both of those failed in a month and I had to switch to Asus. This could be my personal luck but it's worth sharing. I'm sure someone has the exact same story about a different brand.

I've owned 3 MSI boards and 2 of their graphics cards, and never had issues with any of them, so I guess they're alright.

I just prefer the look of ASUS stuff now.

Welcome to the forum!
If you've been watching that long it's about time you joined, sheesh ;)
How did you watch Pauls videos? I mean he knows his stuff and he's informative...but they're so boring! His voice is so monotone. I kind of feel like a dick since that's not really something you can change (at least not easily), but I get about half way through and have to stop.

See as you said, I am the complete opposite. All my Asus and Gigabyte rigs died the first year. My MSI builds lasted 5 years. Just died before Christmas. Thanks for your comments!

I totally agree, and Paul can barely get through anything he does now without a case of beer or drugs. Especially since he teamed up with Kyle. I would rather watch that Joanne, and that is saying a lot.

Might just be brand sponsorship, or coincidence. Either way, I almost exclusively deal with MSI, Corsair, or EVGA parts for most of my computer builds now. Every once in a while I'll find a really good ASUS motherboard too, but usually I'm sticking to the main 3 brands. This goes for my PC's and my clients PC builds that I consult on.

  • I have this thing for MSI's decent, albeit lacking in variety, selection of designs and number of USB ports on their montherboards. (Why is it SO HARD to find well priced motherboards with MORE THAN 6 USB ports on the back? Ugh.) Same goes for their TwinFrozr GPU's.
  • EVGA gets top spot for me since they're the major supplier of nVidia's reference GPU's and I cannot kill their power supplies no matter how many times I "accidentally" short circuit them. (Long story, don't ask.)
  • And Corsair has been making decent cases for a while, along with their fans, and rebadged Asetek AIO coolers too. I'm not a big fan of the RAM however, since I'd rather go with a vendor dedicated to ONLY making RAM.
  • Nothing wrong with ASUS either; I just don't see a lot of advertising or well priced options from them as of recent, so they've been on my backburner for the last little while.

Drugs? Can't say I've ever seen that! Haha, I tried watching one of their WAN Show style shows. Couldn't do it. Was also greatly annoyed when I saw they split them in 2 parts, and I'd have to go to click the link to watch the second half. I don't think so, boys.

I agree! I need 7 iirc, and the number of boards that run too few is incredible. Almost tempts me to step up to x99 just for the wider selection of motherboards.

What RAM company do you go for? IIRC there's only 4 DRAM producers, Crucial being one of the few that uses it's own brand.

Usually I buy whatever RAM is on sale and looks at least half decent, so G.Skill, ADATA. or more recently, Avexir. Sometimes I will buy Corsair RAM, simply because it's a better price, but since literally ALL FLASH NAND is manufacturer by either Micron/Crucial (~44%), SK.Hynix/Samsung (~43%), or GlobalFoundries/Elpida (~9%), RAM brands don't matter as long as it works reliably.

This is actually a driving factor of why I will only ever purchase or recommend Crucial or Samsung SSD's, whether they're 2.5" SATA drives or NVMe PCI-e drives. There's no point buying from someone else who might be charging a higher price for the same product, or who might sell a slightly lower tiered product from the same manufacturer.

At least when I buy a Crucial or Samsung drive, I can trust they used/created the best controller, PCB, and NAND for their drive. Great examples of failures in the SSD industry are Kingston's older V300 SSD's and any drives using SandForce's SF-2281 controller that never received proper firmware upgrades.

Lol, I highly doubt they do in fact use drugs (when live anyway) and if they do, that's their choice. Wasn't trying to judge them on that really, but I guess it does kinda come across that way don't it!
