Gpu thermal paste change help please

Hey guys, I have 2 980ti gaming g6's 

 

i wanted to no no how hard it is to change the gpu thermal paste 

 

and is there a chance of me killing my cards 

 

I want to get the liquid cool laboratory paste 

 

the stuff that's like liquid metal

 

and so my gpus and cpu

 

is it ok to use this stuff on gpus and is it hard ? 

 

And can I use it on my cpu with a corsair h110

Depending on the GPU manufacturer the warranty maybe voided once the cooler is taken off. However as long as you're not stabbing the card when u take off the heatsink and put it back together properly the card will work 100%. There are screws on the PCB side of the card and once you remove all those the heatsink should come right off with ease (watch the fan wires though as they might be connected to the PCB itself.) For the paste you want to use I cannot say yes i've never heard of such a thing, but replacing the thermal paste on GPU die has shown some improvement in many tess no matter the GPU. Happy cooling!

IMO, don't use liquid metal. Instead use something like Arctic MX-4, which is non-conductive, so there isn't a chance that it might squeeze off the die and short out the GPU (and potentially damage it)

There is a chance of killing anything in a PC. 

 

EVGA doesn't care if you remove the TIM and use your own so long as it's electrically non-conductive.

 

Liquid metal would be fine, but I prefer paste. Have you looked at Kryonaut?

I no what ur saying but people are getting 10 degree drops with the liquid metal and that's quit a lot to be honest

It is very easy to replace the thermal compound on anything, either a graphics card or a CPU.  Just go slow, and take your time.  Use a higher than 90% alcohol to clean off all of the old paste (Q-tips work great for this) and then apply a very small amount of the new, about the size of a BB.  Don't use too much!  Let the heat spreader smash it out as you reassemble it.  I recommend MX-4 as it is very high quality, and doesn't require a burning in period.

 

Just remember that you could void your warranty by disassembling your card.  Check first to make sure.

If you've never done it, I wouldn't go with metal first.

Can I get much of a difference from stock paste to mx4 

i only fancied the liquid metal because they drop u 10 degrees

Is that for GPU's specifically? I think most people are using that paste when delidding CPU's. Either way I've gone between stock paste and Arctic Silver 5 on my Sapphire 290x in the past and it improved temperatures by 2-3C at best and I don't expect it to be too much better for any paste that you would be looking at unless the stock paste is god awful.

Depends on just how bad the stock stuff is..... MX-4 performs just 5C worse than liquid metal AFAIK....

5 or 10c isn't gonna matter anyway. Still using a poor performing aio. Put what ever on it.

H110 is a 280 rad 

it's one of the best all in one coolers

Also my cpu is at 4.8 now at 1.32v and hits 66 max in stress testing so I think it's a pretty good cooler

Idk. Unless you want to watercool your GPU, you won't see an improvement even if you use liquid metal.... 77C is pretty much what everyone with 980 Tis is getting....

Don't see how that has anything to do with aio's. But you would still get destroyed in the game regardless how bad ass you think your rig is.

Please enlighten us at what you consider being a good all in one liquid cooler ? Because as much as i would love to agree with you, my H110 has been keeping my 290 at 35°c load for two years now mate

They're all "good". That's not the point. Compared to a custom loop I have no reason to still use them. Isn't rocket science.

Which brings me back to my original point.  Put what ever tim on it you want. It's still an aio and will perform as such.

Well, you can't notice a difference (greater than 1-2C anyways) even with a custom loop..... To notice a sizeable difference you have to use either Dry Ice or Liquid nitrogen.....
