Hi guys

So i've been looking into the ASUS MG279Q to replace my old 1080p monitor, and was wondering whether or not it would be a problem that I have a GTX 970 and not an AMD card, i know it will physically work with it, but I don't know whether or not it will be a terrible experience due to freesync? Would it also be a good idea to save up for the PG279Q or is it just a waste of money to just have G-Sync ontop?

Thanks!!

It will still work it just won't have freesync enabled.

Ah ok, i read somewhere that it would have terrible tearing or something below the 144hz?

The GTX 970 can barely run games at 1440p 60FPS. 1440p 1440FPS is a hell of a stretch. You'll probably have to play at the lowest settings to achieve that framerate. You might still not get it.

It's more for games like overwatch etc, and then when i play games like witcher to cap it at 60fps if thats even possible? (I'm also thinking about getting a 1070 at some point, or a 1080 if they drop when/if the 1080ti comes out)

It might but as @Aereldor said the 970 will struggle to get 144fps at 1440p.

The Witcher 3? Doubt it too. If you lower the settings though. My RX 480 at 1080p can hardly reach 60 (around 50 ish). And that is almost the same level of a GTX 980

Overwatch? Maybe. Just maybe.

970 will run 1440p 144Hz fine. Going from ULTRA  just down to HIGH makes about 30FPS jump in most games. At medium you will be hitting 144Hz in almost all games... except Witcher 3 ;) Stable 60FPS is very doable there.

What games are you playing? Modern titles are barely scratching a 10-15 FPS difference between setting presets in my experience. Not even Rise of the Tomb Raider.

I can manage 60 fps at 1440p on my 970 max apart from a couple of settings (dips do happen occasionally). Would there be an issue at getting lower fps than the monitors refresh rate? Or would it be the same as a 60hz monitor?

Rise of the Tomb Raider, BF1, Witcher 3, Rocket League, Overwatch, ...

I get 60FPS average with my GTX 1060 in BF1 on ULTRA preset and 95FPS average on HIGH preset.

45FPS in Witcher 3 on ULTRA, 80FPS on mix of ultra/high/medium.

On lower fps, sure. If you are hitting constant fps over 120 you will barely notice it.

- You don't need 144 fps to make use of a 144 Hz refresh rate.

It reduces Tearing, and can produce more Pictures per second.

Even at 70 fps, it will look faster and smoother than 60 fps on a 60 Hz Monitor.

- No, you will struggle HARD getting smooth fps with that GPU. We are not talking about going from Ultra to High and tadaaa 100+ fps.

In newer Games we are talking about going down to Medium or even LOW, to maintain over 60 fps.

I have a GTX 1060 (around GTX 980 level, and 6gb Vram instead 3,5 gb). When i had my 1440p / 165 Hz Monitor with Gsync here, in Rise of the Tomb Raider even Medium was barely enough to stay in the 60 fps~ range.

And this is of course mostly for Triple-A titles.

The GTX 970 is more a Card for 1080p Gaming for 60 Hz/fps, where you reduce a few settings down to the 2nd highest.

You CAN work good with a 1440p Monitor, especially with 144 Hz (because it reduces Tearing, so no VSync needed). But keep in Mind, you might have to go down to medium or lower, to hit more than 60 fps~

- Now to Freesync and GSync.

With that resolution, you WILL upgrade your 970 within the next year or 2.

If you buy a Freesync mOnitor today, your next Card WILL be an AMD.

If you plan to stay in Nvidia's World, and don't want to buy an AMD Card, then save for GSync. Believe me. It DOES make a difference depending on the Game.
