No overclocking for 6950x

Hi, I am new in this forum and I am running with some annoying issues with my new rig.

I recently build a PC with the following configuration:

 

CPU: I7 6950x

MOBO: Asus X99-A II

RAM: 32gb DDR Corsair 3200 mhz

PSU: Corsair AX 860

GPU: EVGA GTX 1080

 

I am no expert in overclocking, thats why I only use motherboards presets.

First of all I enabled the XMP profile that set the DDR for 3200 mhz and CPU to 4ghz in all cores. Than I got some random blue screens.

After lowering the DDR to 3000 mhz, so it stop crashing. Made a lot of renders that pushed the CPU to 100% and gaming.

It all ran flawlessly for more than a week, than all of a sudden it started to freeze with a black screen every time I try to render.

The system starts to slow down, the windows stop responding than black screen and nothing.

The temperatures and voltages looks normal. Nothing above 74 degrees Celcius, CPU with 1.25v and memory with 1.35v

 

I turned off XMP and tryed different configurations. But the system only runs without crashing with every overclocking turned off.

Even the slightly alteration makes it crash.

 

I can only think that the mobo is not setting the overclock correctly, but why only almost 2 weeks after perfect functioality it starts to crash?

 

Any help is very welcome

Don't use the built in OC tools. Linus has found they often lead to instability. Look up some 6950X guides and follow them

Don't use the overclocking tools, look for a guide as it ends up being uneven with presets.

Because I really don't like the idea of using a 3200 mhz memory as 2166 mhz

If you use XMP you increase the BCLK, which may lower your max overclock....

For the CPU, use 1.35V and go as high as you can with that voltage.

You should be able to get 4.3-4.4GHz

Hi, thanks everyone for the advices.

I am still testing this, but aparently the problem is with my brand new PSU. I switched the PSUs from my older computer that use the same model (Corsair AX 860), and now using my previous overclock configuration it didn't crash at all.

If I don't experience any kind of crash in the next days I will request RMA.

You won't be able to clock your RAM that high and overclock you're CPU. Increasing the clock on the RAM really doesn't give you any noticeable benefit. Linus has a video on it. Put the RAM at 2133 or 2400 and then overclock the CPU.

x99 runs 3200 MHz RAM just fine.  As a matter of fact, it's considered the sweet spot for Haswell-E and Broadwell-E chips.

What motherboard, my asus strix x99 with a 6800k @ 4.4 doesn't let me run any XMP profiles nor manually set the RAM that fast.

Asus x99 Deluxe/U 3.1.  

 

The memory controller on Broadwell-E is superior to that of Haswell-E, so if anything it should have been easier.

You can use my settings (i7-6850K). Just tweak it a little to fit your system. (don't go beyond 1.35v and you will be fine).

Don't forget to download and flash the latest bios.

oh and try staying within 1.35V (except vccin 1.47(min)-1.98V(max)) and 82°C, unless you really know what you're doing.

Well, I didn't go deep into overclock because first, I am not an expert, second, here in Brazil now is freaking hot and my air conditioning and water cooler can't handle anything close to 1.3 v in the CPU.

The temperatures go higher than 80c easily and I am not confortable with this temp.

 

In the other hand I am very satisfied with the system running at 4ghz. It seems that going higher than this, the amount of performance gain is not proportional to the heat, noise and power consuption.

 

And now leaves me with another question. I managed to keep the system stable with Ram at 3200mhz but my 3D software crashes everytime I fire a render. After lowering to 3000mhz it seems ok.

Does this makes sense?

It could be that your IMC is just that bad.
Intel doesn't really look for IMC strength as most people do not think that memory speed doesn't affect overall performance.

Have you tried running your CPU at stock speeds with XMP on?
You are also running on the latest BIOS?


Just looked at the Asus X99 Strix memory QVL. Corsair's offerings are so small compared to G.SKILL's. Lol

It could be that your CPU has a bad IMC.
Or it could be that the memory itself is bad and needs RMA.

Just looked at the Asus X99 Strix memory QVL. Corsair's offerings are so small compared to G.SKILL's. Lol

It could be that your CPU has a bad IMC.
Or it could be that the memory itself is bad and needs RMA.

yeah, works with stock speed. I can't run the xmp profile and then overclock my cpu to 4.4. Fast CPU speed is way more beneficial than RAM speed.
