Move closer to your access point or move your access point closer to you.

Buy another access point and locate it closer to you.

Purchase a better wireless card

Best of all, use an ethernet cable if possible.

Buy your own Wireless Router if you havent already

if youre using the stock modem/router that you got from your ISP, you should buy your own Router to use instead

the stock ones from the ISP are garbage

and yeah i was fed up with wireless solutions so i bought an 100ft ethernet cable for $30

yea, use wired if possible, wired is almost always better, and normally more reliable, but those three would help the problem, that being said, if you buy a better wifi card and your access point only transmits at 1.5mb max.

To be honest, the actual modem and router parts of the ISP provided units are generally decent and good enough for most home networks. Some do lack in terms of control, though. It's mainly the access point part of it that sucks. In that case, it's a better investment to buy a dedicated access point for $100 than a new router for $100, as you'll often get more for your money, as it doesn't have to deal with the extra features modern routers do.

find out what the problem is first. if it's a congested band with a lot of overlapping signals, then you need to find a different band. 2.4 and 5GHz is the most common, and 5GHz seems to have a lot more room on it than 2.4GHz.

otherwise you can check to see if you have the latest drivers and check to see if there are other applications chewing up bandwidth by opening task manager.

Some ISPs routers, for example BT Home Hubs, aren't too bad actually, they don't always provide all the thrills of expensive ones in cases, but it does offer enough and it's not to bad in terms of wifi range and speed.
