Not much of a super folder, I was expecting a pair of Intel Xeon E5-2697 V2's, 4 GeForce GTX 780's and also an Intel Xeon Phi 5110P CoProcessor or two if there is enough space left.

That would be quite something :)

No tesla won't work. Custom GPU that the FAH client will never be coded to support. We have had other thread about that. Also scratch that Intel Py card, or however it is spelled. :)

First off, read my 4P build log in my sig. I cover off a lot of things. Now, some quick basics...

4P folding will always beat GPU folding in terms of costs, performance and efficiency, no joke. Esp 6000 based AMD systems. Anyone who thinks a GPU folder can compare simply wants to run GPU cards. Raw numbers, a 4P system is cheaper and cranks out a LOT more PPD. Especially when you run power/PPD comparisons.

You do not GPU fold on 2P/4P ubuntu systems. These run linux/ubuntu to gain access to the bigadv projects. GPU folding in Linux right now is very beta.

If you are going to GPU fold, you need to run Windows. And then you could have 500 CPU cores, won't matter. Windows FAH client is not eligible for bigadv projects.

So, if you have nothing and have cash burning a hole in your pocket and you want the best system for folding - get a 4P system. I would not recommend anyone get a 2P board. You are very limited. If you need to, get a 4P board and only one CPU to start, or two. Then grow from there.

If you already had some mobo and cpu lying around and want to use that, then yes, loading it up with 7950's right now be the best bet.

Also, check my multi-GPU build log for various issues you can have with that and board wiring. You may have 5, 6 or ever 7 PCI-e slots, but they may not all work in various combos...

Most of the Intel folders are running those systems only because they had some previous gear. Yes, they are a lot more expensive. But if you can swing it, they are typically a bit mroe power efficient then a AMD solutions

4P - for your budget - go AMD 6300 series. You do not need a lot of ram, as in 4 or 8 GB sticks, but most boards require 2 to 4 sticks per CPU, so buying 16 sticks can get pricey. Most likely you will need to buy a brand new SuperMicro board. Finding that use at a good cost is hard. Get the ram and chips and such of ebay. Link me what you think might work and I can give review for you. Probably need 1000 Watt PSU, run is naked, etc....

Nope - when it was 8 core requirement, Windows was supported. To many 4 core (8 with hyperthreading) systems were getting bigadv and failing. So they increased it to 16... and removed Windows, period. To much screw ups with hyper threading...
