CANT TURN PC ON - DONT KNOW WHERE CABLE BELONGS?

BlakeThePCScrub
Go to solution Solved by Gonio,

Glad it worked bro. :)

There is a strange cable shown in the image below.

It however connects to the power button on my pc which is why I can't turn it on...

Where does this go?

Not entirely sure how the picture relates to the problem.

Refer to your motherboard's manual for front panel connections and header location

Thats a MOLEX,for extra stuff like more fans or LED strips. nothing to do with powering on.

That is a molex plug that is used for powering things such as fans, older hard drives, older disc drives etc... its nearly 100% phased out these days and will not affect your ability to boot your PC from your case.

The above is a molex. You sure that the internal headers are connected properly? But yes, check manual of case for cables and the mobo manual for the way to connect.

Or this

The molex hha.

I spoke to someone and the idea is that all 3 front panel fans and the power switch up top have cables leading together down to the molex, some of the fans then go up into a chip on the back of the case saying fan 1-8 and "Power".

I need to buy a molex adapter to 4 or 6 pin so I can plug it into the power supply.

That sounds quite weird, the power button should be a cable of two that you connect directly to your mobo.

Do follow revsilverspine's advice.

The power plug from your case is a thin, individual cable, about 5 or 6 of them bundled together that plug directly into a pin out on your motherboard. They look similar to this:

This sounds its more a power connector for something such as LED control or a fan, not to power the case.

There is a chip above that, which has a small pin on the back of the case with the label above it "power".

this then leads to the molex, alongside leds and fans......

Straight from the case manual. Looks like its for the LED control switch. The top left portion is the portion you need to locate for the power. Then on your motherboard, Reference your motherboard owners manual, there is a specific spot to plug in these plugs to provide the connectivity between your motherboard and case.

sorry, used my mac to take photo, but on the left of the image you can see that switch and above it says "POWER".

This leads to the molex...

The pc did not turn on earlier although I had spent 10hours on the build itself assuring everything was correct, apart from that molex which I also assumed was only LEDS and Fans...

The manual contains nothing on the subject of a molex... I read all 30 pages.

Completely ignore the Molex. Only concentrate on what the top left portion of that page shows. Thats all you should care about. The Molex has absolutely ZERO bearing on your power.

Those are the LED indicator lights for HDD activity. There should be a similar one with 2 wires that says Power SW or similar to this. This is what we need to locate and ensure it is plugged into the right spot on your motherboard to provide power to the case power button.

Correct, the + and - on this connector doesnt matter how it gets plugged in, as long as it gets connected to the correct 2 pins on the motherboard. On the MSI Z170 Gaming 5 it will be called JFP1.

Follow this picture taken directly from the owners manual downloaded from the MSI website You should plug the power switch into pin 6 and 8 which are the top 2 on the right at the very top just to the left of the missing pin.
