Hi guys I am looking for a budged cpu to make a pc for my dad. He usually just uses the pc to do some light browsing (Facebook, youtube) and sometimes uses office. My budget is very strict and I want the pc to last for at least 3 years just for browsing purposes. What would the minimum CPU you guys would choose for such a task? I personally think that intel g4400  would do the job just fine. Do you guys have any other suggestions? I do not think I can spare to spend more than $100 CAD on a CPU.

Overall I do not want this PC to cost more than 300 CAD

that pentium is enough, maybe a celeron if your budget is really tight.

Would you consider used laptops? there some quite decent out there for decent prices, something like an i3 or even an i5 4gb ram, maybe you can squeeze on this budget and give him more mobility with it while still being capable of such tasking.

If you want something that will last you at least 3 years, then building a good decent quality computer build is the way to go.

Buying an used computer system is risky and you really don't know how much abuse that used computer was put through.

I highly recommend that you save up MORE money to better invest in a better and longer lasting computer system.

Here is what I recommend.

 I have a cheap net machine. dual core apu ( $34 ) an FM2 motherboard ( $40 ) one 4gig stick of ram ( $26 ) a $45 1TB HD / a cougar case ( 425 ) and a 380watt Antek power supply..... you can add a $13 optical drive and you're set but for the operating system.

so, if you shop right it'll be under 200 bucks.

If you wanted to, once hes done with it you could salvage the RAM, HDD, CPU, add a new powersupply, case, mobo and, budget GPU. And then you've got a great starter gaming pc.

I'm sorry, we did a bit of a thread hijack there. Since your dad is just browsing the web, you can make a computer that will work for him for very little money.

It looks like the new Kaby Lake Pentiums have hyperthreading, so I'll try to fit one of those in there.

As it turns out, it is very doable, albeit with a couple corners cut. The case + power supply is a bit on the cheap side and even hurts the enthusiast inside of me, but this computer will pull less power than a conventional lightbulb (60W). So if you want to turn this computer into a gaming machine, you should invest on a better PSU, but until then the one on this Rosewill case should work.

And also only 4GB RAM. I find that it's still enough to browse the internet provided you don't use Chrome, and you can upgrade it later if you want. What you end up with is actually a pretty nice computer.

Note that this is all based on speculation because that Pentium might not have hyperthreading after all, so there would be cheaper alternatives. But since it shows up on Intel's own official site, I'm confident enough to give it to you.

Very similar to @Energycore's build but with 8GB RAM. Again, if the Pentium doesnt end up having HT, the G4400 is a much better deal.
