Cheapest LGA2011-3 CPU

Okay... I'm planning on upgrading from my Z97 motherboard and 1231 V3 CPU, and I want to upgrade to a X99 motherboard... But I want get a really decent motherboard first... And REALLY cheap out on the CPU. So, I'm looking for the cheapest LGA2011-3 socket CPU to use temporarily.

My plan is to get a decent X99 motherboard, 2x8GB DDR4 memory and reuse my 212 Evo, but I want to find the cheapest CPU there is for LGA2011-3, and then save up for the 6800k, but try for the 6850k.

Could I get some help looking for one? And, perferable... Use www.ebay.co.uk

Many thanks

Why do you even need a 6800k?

Don't waste money on X99 unless your job is rendering or 3d modeling or data analysis or something like that.

I'm not sure about UK pricing, but in the US the 5820K is the cheapest by about $50 versus the 6800K. Still not exactly what I'd consider a "temporary" CPU, especially when you consider the 5820K is usually roughly equivalent to the 6800K. There really isn't a "cheap" LGA-2011-3 CPU.

i7-5820K is the cheapest X99 CPU. Also, buy 4x4GB kit of RAM so it can run in a quad-channel mode.

The reason I want X99 is because it has a very nice upgrade path, and supports 28/40 lane CPUs... And since I'm planning on having 2-way SLI along with a M.2 to PCIe adapter and a WiFi card... So the minimum of a 28 lane CPU is what I'm looking for...

The reason I would be going with 2x8GB is because then I can keep buying 2x8GB sticks to have 64GB RAM. Mainly... Just because I can.

It's not necessary to have an X99 board for that. On a Skylake system, for instance, you can run two-way SLI using 8x/8x from the CPU, and then you've still got up to 20 more PCIe 3.0 lanes from the chipset at up to 4x for the other devices.

For comparison, you've got 28 or 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU on an X99 system, but you've only got eight PCIe 2.0 lanes coming from the chipset. It's not really a problem, but this use case doesn't demand X99.

Oh, that I did not know... So, in theoey... I could have 8x/8x SLI setup for GPUs coming from the CPU, than I could use the 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes which go upto x4 and I could use them for anything... Right?

Basically. I'm not sure if every Z170 motherboard gives you all 20 of those, I think motherboard manufacturers can opt to use some for additional USB or other types of devices. But in theory, yes. @Sakkura explains this better than I can in the post linked above. The point being, your 16 CPU lanes are not your only PCIe connectivity on Z170.

Cheapest is the 6 core Xeon at the price of a Core i3 around $200ish, but you get the processing speed of a tablet at 1.6GHz. The new one ups the speed to 1.7GHz. For X99 there is no temporary CPU, you either get it or don't.

It actually has a total of 26, 6 of them are reserved for USB 3.0, and the 20 lanes is for the user.
