Western Digital discourages upgrading to OS X 10.9

LOGO.png

In a email send to its costumers Western Digital is discouraging people upgrading to the latest OS X version after reports of data-loss on the new mac OS.

Western Digital recommends people who have already updated to remove their external WD drives and uninstall the WD software to avoid data-loss.

Dear WD Registered Customer,

As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer.

The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years, however solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue.

Sincerely,

Western Digital

I know mac's aren't that big on this forum but it's a good thing to spread the word and warn people who do have one :)

I've never had a Seagate drive fail on me, but I have had 3 WD drives from family members that I have replaced for them.

I still have a 500GB from early 2008 running strong.

My build:

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.0GHz Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 RAM: 12GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 Storage: Samsung 120GB 840 SSD Cooling: Corsair H100 with Noctuas Case: Fractal Arc Midi R2

I personally have a 120GB Samsung 840 Series SSD for boot, and 1 TB WD Green for storage which works great as well. I then have 2 Seagate drives lying around that I use for random storage when I need it. (Excluding one, SATA plastic socket broke off from dumb personal mistake)

Honestly though I don't think the brand really matters, when it comes down to it they are still hard drives and still frequently fail.

Then why did you use Samsung 840 Series SSD and WD Green HDD. Why not others?

Apple's fault here or not, it seems to be blunder after blunder after blunder for them. Their QA clearly isn't as good as it once was.

what's with all the hate with Apple.

It's generally been known that WD products really didn't work well with Macs (esp. their ext storage).
