Well your build is already quite high-end lol

I would upgrade PSU and GPU only, and add an SSD.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

It depends on what you plan to use it for. If you are going to be doing primarily gaming, I would recommend upgrading the GPU first, and then upgrading the CPU later. You should also add an SSD, and if you are going to move to X99, probably getting a new PSU would be a good idea.

get a 6700k or a 5820k for x99 those are the best cpus for money, wait for zen if you can wait a while its shows a lot of promise.

for gpu get a 1070 for 1440p gaming or high fps 1080p gaming

get a 480 if you want to save money and still get good fps in 1080p.

get a 1080 for 4k gaming.

get a titan xp if you have too much money and want to burn it.

wait for new amd card or the 1080 ti for awsome gaming experience.

I already came from a Pentium and 750ti, so I can feel the power ^^ Though sometimes I still get <40FPS in some games that shouldn't be that intensive. I don't know why.

It's probably your 970. The 6600k is a very capable chip.

Get a higher end PSU possibly and even though something like RX 480 8GB would be best paired with an i5-6600k, it isn't a big enough upgrade to justify $240 so I would wait for Vega to see what the RX 490 offers.

I'd get a Crucial MX300 275GB or 525GB.

A quieter cooler maybe? My 212 gets pretty audible

Maybe more RAM if you don't already have 16GBs or more

Could maybe look into a sexy case if you don't already have a sexy case? Maybe one with tempered glass such as the Phanteks P400s w/ tempered glass when it releases.

IMO, Wait for Vega, get an SSD and the rest is really up to you

Upgrade to maybe a 1070 and get a better PSU like a G2 or G3. X99 isn't worth it unless you are doing professional work, Z170 is fine for consumers. Get a 7700K later in like 2-3 years

the 480 is better then 1060 or the 1060 3gb. the 1060 3 gb is not really a 1060 its a 1050 ti buffed up not worth getting.

He already owns this. RX 480 is not good enough upgrade, he mightaswell wait for Vega and it would be stupid for him to go to a completely new platform when he already owns a 6600k. Imo, the only reason he should consider going for a 6700k is if he wants to sell his 6600k or the 6600k isn't enough for what he does. Which even if he renders, records ect it should be good enough unless he is throwing out daily videos or having issue with streaming

It would be better to just upgrade to Intel's latest high end consumer i7 that they have out in about 3 years, that probably won't be the 7700k anymore.

Best price to performance is the 480 4GB, which about matches a 1060 for $220. The 1060 3GBs that you can find for $200 straight are also fine, and RX 470s for $180 as well.

So.. what I would do for sure is this..

See what AMD and Nvidia talk about at CES. AMD is talking about Vega meanwhile Nvidia is probably Volta or 1080Ti.

Get a better PSU such as a 650w EVGA G2.

275-525GB Crucial MX300 SSD

Other possibilities but aren't needed

An AIO and or quieter CPU cooler

A good looking case (again if you don't already have one)

While I see the point of SSDs, they are really expensive for the storage they have, and I don't mind waiting a few moments in games. I have tons of photos and various files hogging my desktop.

An upgrade from a 970 to a 480 is not worth it for the money. And as he just said, an i5 is more then capable of 90% of tasks.
