Upgrade Internet Plan or Router

My family is looking to upgrade our internet and we currently just use the modem/router our provider gave us. Is it better for us to upgrade our internet plan or buy a router? Will buying a router improve our internet speeds or will we be too limited by our basic internet plan of 6Mbps?

not because your ISP Router cant handle it but because they are mostly insecure

Your'e internet plan is the bottleneck. Upgrade that, and then shop around for a new router and maybe modem. If you own your own, then you won't have to pay to rent from the isp. They will pay for themselves in a year. Mine already have.
