How to output TV sound through 5.1 home system

I have a Samsung SMART TV (UA49K6300) and I want to output its sound towards my 5.1 home system. Each speaker connects to the Samsung DVD player and in turn, the DVD player is connected through HDMI to the TV. Is there a way for me to use the speakers when I'm using my TV (for watching movies, etc.)?

use the optical out to plug into your reciver

Nope, not without a dedicated receiver. That DVD player is acting as the receiver in this setup, so you have to either use the optical or no sound

I don't know about your speaker system, but the one I have for my living room has an HDMI-in and out to split the audio and video - the HDMI out of course going to the TV and the speakers taking the audio signal for itself.

That would be a 'receiver' as I said before

...Isn't this what ARC is for...? Why isn't the TV just sending it's audio back to the DVD player over the Audio Return Channel of the HDMI cable?

Yes, most of the Samsung DVD/receiver combos support ARC so it might be as simple as enabling it in the system menu.
