My graphics card (R9 290X) just died?

Go to solution Solved by MadMurl0c,

Well I guess the warranty is my last hope :D

Thanks for your help everyone, I'll report back if I got an answer from the vendor.

Edit : I bought this graphics card used from another person. Altough it's not even 2 years old the vendor and ASUS said that I can't send it in for repair :/ but they also said I could try and send an email to asus RMA, lets see what happens.

Edit2 : Send the graphics card to Asus and got it back from RMA today, works fine :) and didn't even took one month o.O

Thanks to everyone of you for helping me out :)

Hey guys it's me again,

and this time I got a really big problem. My R9 290X Matrix from Asus which I bought 1 1/2 years ago just died and I dont know why. It was overclocked to 1100Mhz but never ran hotter than 70°C. It worked perfectly without any problems for weeks, but yesterday when I decided to play a round Just Cause 3 my PC crashed without a reason. I just restarted it because and saw a blue "shadow" on a part of my screen from boot on. Windows only booted in safe mode until i removed the graphics card drivers. When I tried to install new / old ones the screens went black and I had to press the power button on my PC. I also tried to get the graphics card in safe mode with the 2nd bios, nothing helped.

Is there something I can do to fix it or do I have to buy a new card?

Thanks in advance for your answers / help :)

1. Reseat the GPU to another PCI-e.

2. CMOS restart

3. Safe mode

If none work, your shit might be fucked.

You have another GPU of some sort you can try (maybe a laptop?), your GPU may be fucked but you know, maybe it's the screen that's somehow got destroyed :P

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

- Changed to 2nd bios to remove the overclock

- Checked if everything is plugged in correctly

- Tried another PCIe slot

- CMOS reseted

- Safe Mode

Still the blue bar on my screen :/ It seems to be slightly transparent, I can look through the blue but it changes the color of everything behind it.

I am actually using the same screen on my laptop and it works pretty fine, so it can't be the screen too.

Did you try uninstalling all overclocking utilities and drivers and not installing any GPU-related software?

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Yes, I removed Asus GPU Tweak II and my complete AMD drivers, now I can boot without safe mode but blue bar is still there.

Warranty? Theoretically yes, bought it 1 1/2 years ago, but I changed the cooler because the stock one was crap.. I hope that I can still get a new one.

Yeah I think you can, just put the original crappy one back since they probably want it along with the other stuff which came in the package.

Oh wait, this is an ASUS card we are talking about? err...if you ain't getting your replacement/repair via store warranty you might have a harder time with ASUS customer support. Still worth a shot though.

This is the card, with the stock cooler the GPU reached 94°C and throttled down when playing games every time :/ So I had to change it.

Hopefully I get a replacement without having to talk to ASUS Support. Is there something more I can try?

It seems like you've tried everything you can, warranty might be your only option now. Track down receipts and order confirmation info, then take it up with either the vendor or with ASUS themselves.
