Has there ever been a time when AMD's top offering was superior to that of Nvidia's?

I've been wondering about this lately. I'm not necessarily saying that Nvidia > AMD, because they really aren't, and I'm not necessarily saying that AMD always performs poorly. I'm just wondering if there was ever a time when AMD's top offering was superior to that of Nvidia's.  

 

Time and time again for the past few years, their top-end cards have been unable to match the speed of their Team Green counterparts, at least for a while after launch. Many of their cards (like my 290X) catch up afterward, but not before many driver patches and whatnot.

Technically a 295x2 > Titan Z and a 390x2 > Titan X (Maxwell).

Pretty much the Fury X was the first card not to be better than Nvidia's top offering as of its release. And it's our fault - here's a video about it.

During Fermi ATI beat nVidia in about every aspect, except for sales.

Well the 7970 and 290x both were better.

AMD have had numerous CPU achievements less than 10 years ago too.

290x came out like 2 weeks before

 

Anyway amd ages like fine wine check some newer benchmarks and the 290x even beats the 780 Ti in some now

This entire thread is with the cards at launch. In which case the 780Ti was better. The 780Ti was better for quite a long time too.

HD 4000 series and HD 5000 series had some nice performance. The 280 was around ~5% faster than a 4870 I believe but had a much larger die size and also was much more expensive. Somehow those cards still didn't sell well though :/.

.....less than a month before, when the development cycle is years. They're the same generation.  The 290x was the inferior card at launch. Period. There is no discussion.

You can make the argument all you want, but that won't make it true. In terms of performance, it was against the 290x. And again, the thread is still top tier card vs. top tier card (i.e. 780Ti/Titan Black vs. 290x). 

 

780Ti > 290x 

290 > 780

280x > 770

770 > 280 

760 > 270/x

Well...OK. The 390X2 was barely a card...I can't believe people actually bought that. 

 

As for the 295X2, yes, it was faster, but not because the 290X was faster than the Titan - it was because Nvidia cut the GK110 a lot on the Titan Z, while AMD actually put two faster chips on their dual-GPU card, and they also had a better cooling solution. You're right...but could we stick to single-GPU cards, please?

So is that why there are so many GTX 480 memes? As far as I know, the GTX 480 came out far after the 5870, and still failed to dethrone it.

Basically, Fermi was behind in every way. If you watch the video above("The GPU war is over") he does a pretty good job at explaining the generations of GPU's.

The last time AMD own the fastest single GPU is when they released 7970 while Nvidia took another 6 months to release the 680.

everytime i bought AMD GPU's it's because they were faster...happened once in the past 10 years...i bought an HD7950.

I don't know if they do anymore but I think they did at some point.
