If it's making a silent noise then you can't hear it do you mean a quiet grinding noise

Stop writing/reading anything to that disk.

It is normal for hdds to make a slight "grinding" or scratching noise when the disk is reading/writing info.

Could you maybe be a bit more descriptive about the noise?

Usually they make weird noises like little clicky popping noises and sometimes even produce strange pitches if they are getting older.

I would back it up to another drive and then buy a new one if it's a problem.

It's probably on its way out.

Hdds clicking or grinding is a sign of imminent mechanical failure. I'd replace.

Yeah, it depends on the loudness.

Basically if it sounds odd with a mechanical drive be prepared for a failure. I had a HDD fail on me luckily prewarned for a failure and managed to clone the entire OS drive onto a brand new one.

Given how cheap HDs are it would seem silly to not take precautions.

Doesn't matter. If its been dropped (physical damage) it can fail!
