Unable to install Windows 8.1

chris nguyuen

Hi guys,

I am having a little trouble installing windows on my new pc. What I have done is download the .iso off of the microsoft website and bought a key for it. I have used etcher (mac) to make my usb drive a bootable drive however when I plug my usb key into my pc, it goes straight to the BIOS. I can see my drives and the USB key is detected as a drive so what I did was pressed F8 to boot my computer from the USB however it still goes straight to the BIOS.

Does it have to do with me using a mac to create the usb drive bootable?

Thanks

AFAIK you need a PC to create the Windows installation media.

Try using dd in the mac to make the usb stick(dd is in the terminal)

Yeah I tried that too. Doesn't work. I'll try and figure out a way to do it on windows.

Why are you using Windows 8.1 out of curiosity?

This would be much simpler with Windows 10.

rufus on windows works well.

You don't really need rufus.

Just grab an ISO. Copy it to a USB and extacting the ISO manually works as well.

I'm a stickler for privacy. Even though windows 7 is the most private. I think I can deal with windows 8. Might upgrade in the future However.

So what I would do is open the .iso file on my mac, copy all the files on that .iso onto a USB?

I'd recommend doing this on a PC.

Windows 8 is just as bad as Windows 10 in terms of privacy FYI.
