More cores vs more gigahertz

Go to solution Solved by Lord Pantaloons,

The i7-2630QM in my laptop (2.0-2.9Ghz but usually runs about 2.4Ghz due to heat) gets about 2500 more PPD than my 3570k @4Ghz. Not exactly a Dual vs Quad comparison but the threads make a difference. I would say more cores are better than overall clockspeed with the same/similar architecture.

Sy you have 2 CPUs with the same architecture but one is a dual core 4 ghz and the other is qual core 2ghz in general which one is better in an application that fully utilizes the cores

The quad core, most of the time, unless you are using an application that only uses one thread.

depends on what you want to do, for gaming( which I'm assuming), the dual core because higher clocks speeds matter

Depends on the application's needs.

personally would go quad core. but thats cause imo its "faster" and better at multitasking in the real world.but thats based off of my experience not on any actual numbers

I find that very hard to believe. yes having more thread is nice but the 3570K has most double the clock speed no way in hell hyperthreading alone makes that mobile i7 fast enough to beat a 3570K even for folding. if thats the case then the comparison isn't apples to apples because something must be bogging down the 3570K.

idk, It's not very consistent, 2500 is the most I've seen but more often than not it gets more PPD to some extent. It's not like I'm running anything else while I'm folding because I do it when I'm sleeping and I have pretty much everything in the background turned off.

You also realise the project determines the PPD. Sometimes I get a huge PPD boost and other times i don't.

I didn't guess that's why then.

Comparing an i5 to an i7 is going to make for a very bad example here.  Both are QUAD cores, with the latter also possessing four logical cores via hyper-threading (having one core do two things).  That i7 (Sandy Bridge) in that laptop will not even come close to the level of performance from an i5-3570K (Ivy Bridge).  Hyper-threading only adds 10% performance, at best, and that is only for applications that are programmed to take advantage of it.

Readmy edit

in that case i would say quad but that doesn't mean you can drop the speed to like 500mhz lol it would probably only be better until a certain clock speed on the quads
