 I was thinking about buying a Nvidia GTX 1080  however I was told getting 2 less  expensive graphics cards and going SLI would be a more cheap and better performance option any help?

1080.

SLI has a ton of problems, and you can't SLI every every card or with every Mobo, or PSU etc.

Go for the 1080. Some games don't support SLI and SLI just adds more heat and more power usage.

Personally SLI only makes sense when you're already at the highest end, 980Ti, 1080, Titan XP ,RX480 if you're building a brand new system or simply wants to upgrade the GPU go for the highest end single GPU your budget can pay, it'll safely always be the best alternative
