Hello

I currently have a Gigabyte GTX 660 and I want to upgrade because it´s a bit old and do not run newer games good enough. I have been looking at the 9-series and 10-series of Nvidia card. I´ve mainly been looking at: 1070 (about 550 USD), 1060 (about 400 USD), 980/980ti (about  330/390 USD), 970 (about 170 USD). Say if you recommend any other ones. The 10- series card are new (from store) and the 9-series are second-hand.

I have read that the 1070 is totally overkill for 1080p 60hz, is this the case? Right now I´m thinking of getting the 1070 and then not needing to upgrade for 3-4 years, is this a good idea?

Also I have a problem with choosing model of card, I have seen and read that you should buy a reference/"blower" style card when upgrading a prebuild PC (due to fewer case fans).

Thanks in advance // TiCaHe

And remember that the prices are converted from SEK to USD and because I live in Sweden so they might be a little bit higher than the US equivalent.

The games I currently play:

Battlefield Hardline

Battlefield 3

Overwatch

Beam.NG

Star Citizen (Unplayable with GTX 660)

The rest of my system:

Acer Predator case (2011)

Acer Predator motherboard (2011)

Intel i7 2600 3,3gz (With bigger cooling)

Corsair Vengeance 16 GB RAM

Gigabyte GTX 660 2 GB

600W FSU

200GB SSD

1 TB HDD

GTX 960 = GTX 1050 TI

GTX 970 = GTX 1060 3gb

GTX 980 = GTX 1060 6gb

GTX 980TI = GTX 1070

GTX 1080 beats all.

the GTX 970 and the GTX 980TI are your best value from that selection.

the GTX 1060 is 200$ more than it should be,

the GTX 1070 is 100-150$ more than it should be.

If you can get a 1070 get that.

It is indeed overkill for now but if you want to keep it for 3-4 years it's probably a different story.

Anyway, if you want to keep it for that long and don't want to spend that much, an rx 480 might suit you better.

AMD cards usually age better than nvidia cards and performance is exactly the same in general, unless the rx 480 is much more expensive for you.

I can get the 1070 but how is the RX 480 compared to the 1070, because the RX 480 is only 330 USD (converted from SEK to USD)

Since you only have a i7 2600, I'd recommend a GTX 1060/GTX 970/RX 480. whichever is the cheapest from those three. (since theyre just about equal to eachother.)

Are there any refurbished R9 Furies you can pick up? The Fury generally performs better than a 1060 6GB, actually competing with a GTX 1070 in DX12 and Vulkan games and more so at 1440p while in a DX12/Vulkan game. Generally should cost less than a GTX 980 and perform better.

Well this confirms my answer. Fury is best bang for buck, especially for 1080p 60Hz gaming, and if you decide to jump to 1440p 60Hz gaming, it will do fine, especially if the game is DX12/Vulkan.

Do you recommed the 3gb or the 6 gb 1060? because ^here^ you say the 1060 3 gb = 970 and the the rx480 has 8 gb im assuming it´s compared to the 1060 6 gb.

rx 480 = 1060 6GB in DX11.

in DX12 rx 480 is a little bit better than the GTX 1060 (5-10% give or take).

I wouldn't get an r9 fury because i'm not sure the PSU will be enough.

It's probably not a great one so i wouldn't push it too hard...

Is it an rx 480 4GB or 8GB?

The Rx 480 is a 8 GB the 4GB one is about 50 USD cheaper

Not that is matters but the PSU is changes once from the one that was in the pre-built

That's reasonable good value then.

The rx 480 8GB is probably the best option then.

Won't be bottlenecked by the CPU, not exactly overkill, AMD cards age better over time and with 8GB that's about as good as it's going to get VRAM wise.

Also, freesync support :P If you care about that.

Pretty sure the 1070 can best the 980Ti and the 1050Ti bests the 960.
