Is an i5 4690 still worth buying for gaming?

Eulg
Go to solution Solved by xc3ll,

I'm using the 4690 currently and there isn't a huge performance difference to skylake. So yes, they are still worth it, since a complete plattform upgrade is way more expensive. Last time I checked, the prices for used 4690 weren't that bad. On ebay they were around 150-180.

Only the famous 4690K and 4790K are heavily overpriced...

I am currently running a core i3 4170 and considering getting an upgrade. I was planning on getting a core i5 4690 as I don't have a z97 motherboard so theres no point in spending extra for the K version for overclocking. I know skylake processors are better and give a much better upgrade path, but I simply cannot afford a new motherboard and RAM to go with something like a core i5 6500. Besides I probably won't upgrade my pc for another say 3 years and by then intels new brand of processors will probably be out by then. Is it still worth me buying the 4690 for gaming?

used ? yes

you can save money by buying one on the cheap and you don't have to change the motherboard wich will save you even more money

new? no

edit : I still run a 2600 and In 1080 I have yet to find a game that uses it 100% , even GTA5 does not

RyzenAir : AMD R5 3600 | AsRock AB350M Pro4 | 32gb Aegis DDR4 3000 | GTX 1070 FE | Fractal Design Node 804
RyzenITX : Ryzen 7 1700 | GA-AB350N-Gaming WIFI | 16gb DDR4 2666 | GTX 1060 | Cougar QBX

Cause your GPU is not powerful enough. Run it with a 1070 and run Watch Dogs 2 on Ultra at 1080p, enjoy 100% usage on every thread ^^

4690 is worth it, but for GPUs that are below a GTX 1070 in performance, so something around a 980Ti would be the top GPU I'd pair with an i5-4690.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

I don't play WD2 , also I run all games at locked 60fps , so maybe that's why aswell :P

I'll be running it with the gtx 1060 6GB thats the main reason I am getting the CPU upgrade due to the bottlenecking of my current I3 CPU. For what I've seen online the GTX 1060 is pretty solid

Thank you for the help I saw on ebay also they were going for around 150 which to me was insane since I paid around 100 for my i3 a while back. I just wasn't sure if the 4th gen i5's were still powerful for modern games like the witcher 3, or the new tomb raider. But if there isn't much performance difference then I'm hoping it will perform well.

Yup, paired with a GTX 1060 6GB it's a perfect match. Do you already have the GTX 1060?

I have 2 machines one with a i5 4690k and a RX 480 and another one i5 4590 and a R7 370 and I haven't seen either of those CPUs bottleneck any graphics card yet and I even tried the RX 480 with the lower clocked i5 4590 and it works perfectly fine with no bottleneck

Youtube search the combination.. or relative combo.

I5 4690 gtx 1060 or I5 4690 gtx 970

You'll get plenty of results, hopefully with the MSI Overlay also included.

I have an i5 4690.

It chews 1080p gaming on my GTX970 overclocked to about a stock GTX980.

No games have given me CPU trouble that I own.

But easily enough.. go check youtube for i5 4690 + gyx 970 (more of these than 1060) so more vids will show.

But the 1060 and 970 are so close its what you pretty much are going to be seeing on a well built clean system.

But I have no gaming concerns yet, only my encoding is the reason for me to upgrade.

Full GPU usage across all my games (30+ games seen and tested )

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Also I have used a i3 4370 in my ITX LAN Party/Sare PC and that was chokeing on some more CPU heavy games like Battlefield 1 and as soon as I upgraded the CPU in that machine to a i5 4590 there was no more bottleneck

In BF1 I have super high usage.

It's  the only game where i can see 100% on all cores (it varies too <70-100%> in game, not constantly pegged but still higher than any other game)

However, GPU usage is still 99-100% and I'm still seeing 75-95fps in 64p MP.

I would say if you dont have a Z97 board.

Then grab a Xeon E3-1231-V3 or a 1241-V3.

This is basicly the same as an i7, but without a igpu.

in terms of pricing they are significantly cheaper,

and offer the same performance.

With a Xeon E3 there still will be allot of lifespan in your system for gaming.

Because they wont have any problem feeding the latest highend gpu´s.

With an i5 you allready starting to get limmited in certain newer AAA games, that benefit from having more threads available. with a highend gpu like GTX1070 and up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but CPU usage is a measure of how utilised the cores are on your CPU, so it wont be different for an i7 2600k, or an i7 6700k since they are both 4 cores with hyperthreading. If he sees 100% usage with a 2600k then he will also see 100% with a 6700k and then the 6700k will be bottlenecking him?

100% of 2600k 100% of 6700K as the latter is significantly more powerful.
