Gtx 1080 bottleneck on 1080p?

It would be best to pair it with i7 6700k

You can play any game at 1440p max settings at 60fps.

But for 4K, you will need to turn down some settings to get those magical 60fps.

Intel i7 12700K | Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 | Pure Loop 240mm | G.Skill 3200MHz 32GB CL14 | CM V850 G2 | RTX 3070 Phoenix | Lian Li O11 Air mini

Samsung EVO 960 M.2 250GB | Samsung EVO 860 PRO 512GB | 4x Be Quiet! Silent Wings 140mm fans

WD My Cloud 4TB

I5 would be good for resolution higher than 1080P

I7 for any resolution

Resolution doesn't really impact CPU.

Higher Resolution would slow down the GPU and making it more equal to the cpu

The lower the resolution the more your CPU is a bottleneck to your graphics card at certain point where it can't keep up feeding it with information.

For example at 1080p  you can get 90FPS but your GPU is at 50% utilization.

At 1440p you also get 90FPS but your GPU is at 85% utilization.

In both cases the CPU is a bottleneck but less so on 1440p and it would be gone at 4k where the GPU would become bottleneck.

For OP...  for playing at 60Hz it doesn't matter if you get i5 6400 or i5 4440 or i5 6600k. If you play at 144Hz get i7 6700k.

Doesn't matter. You can still go 4k with an i5 as long as your GPU can handle it.

Isn't that exactly what I said?

I just explained it more so that answers questions OP might have.

60 frames on a free sync/g sync monitor are all you need. Running 144 Hz is for your ego or for COMPETITIVE FPS (you playing in your moms basement does not qualify).

Yes, the i5 bottlenecks a 1080 at 1080p, in nearly every game.
