i3 6100, good enough for Battlefield 1?

So I just ordered my new RX 480 and I thought a CPU upgrade would be a good thing.

I really don't have the money for a 6600k, so I thoght I might get the 6100 now and upgrade to the new Kaby Lake i7 later. But is the i3 good for good enough for not bottlenecking my RX 480 8GB, especially in the next 2 years.

The most CPU intensive games I play are Battlefield 1 and Witcher 3.

That's gonna struggle a bit... Can you get a 6500 at least ?

Well, my budget isn't that big. Maybe a 6400 would just fit in there.

When it comes to the i5's in this gen the 6500 is the sweet spot in terms of price and the performance you get... 6400 is meh for the money and the 6600k gets it's ass handed to it by the stock 6700 so that's in a bad spot.

I5 6400 would be the way to go. Just look at some benchmarks on YouTube and you will see that it actually makes a big difference between the 6100 and 6400

Also i7 kaby lake would be overkill for an RX 480 unless you will also use it for editing etc (even i7 6700k is overkill for gaming nowadays)

Well, you guessed it. I want to do some editing in the future, but my current PC can't handle it. And of course I will upgrade my GPU to a 1170,

or whatever, when I get the new CPU.

Not exactly a true statement anymore. The 6400 is down to $174, and the 6500 is at $190 per PCPartPicker. Granted, SuperBiiz is the low-priced merchant on both, but I've seen the 6400 at that price or a touch lower elsewhere--as low as $169 at Fry's with a promo code. Using those numbers and the maximum turbo frequency of each CPU (3.3GHz for the 6400 and 3.6GHz for the 6500), we get per-GHz prices of $52.72 for the 6400 and $52.78 for the 6500. The 6400 is now priced marginally better than the 6500.

Even using the more common price point of $180, we come up with $54.54 per GHz. Higher than the 6500, yes, but not painfully so. The 6500 is still a better CPU long-term, and would still be my preference in a gaming rig, but the value of the 6400 has come way up from where it was. It still kicks the 6100's ass in just about every way.

Of course, with the 6100 appearing in the wild as low as $90 (Fry's with promo code), that's an even more appealing buy for general purpose, HTPC and budget gaming rigs.

Long term, you bet your ass the 6700 is a safer bet. We're rapidly approaching the point of AAA titles being interested in all the threads, and I suspect that day will be here long before the Skylake CPUs are obsolete. The i5 is a perfectly good gaming CPU today, and if you plan to build from scratch on Cannonlake, then an i5 is plenty. Beyond that, especially as the second generation of VR headsets start to appear and the games using them become more and more complex--remember, we're already capable of near-photorealistic graphics--eight threads will be a must for high-end gaming, not a nice-to-have.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Between all the i5 variations in this generation the others really aren't worth their salt... Kinda pointless buying a 6600k (I mean why pay  that extra for an unlocked multiplier when you could have just bought a 6700 for basically the same price.) And the 6400 to me is just slight better than the 6320 (I was hell bent on buying this if I couldn't get a 6500)

Got any that it isn't. I couldn't find any benchmarks directly comparing a overclocked 6600k at about 4.5Ghz, which I would say is realistic, and a stock i7 6700 at 3.7Ghz.

They didn't patch it. Nothing has been resolved. Same cpu usage as before. All my i5's friend are lagging here and there. Some maps are ok. Some are laggy as hell.

Its a new time : Time of the more than 4 core is used in games xD

I just picked up a 6500 for $165. You can also get a 6300 for absolutely a steal right now.

I could never rock an i3. Just to give you perspective, my 8320 at 4.7 GHz is still slower than a 3.2 (with 3.6 Turbo) skylake chip. What!

i3 hiccups on stuff. If you want smooth gameplay across multiple games and genres, you need a quadcore.

I could justify the i7 at $100 more. I play old and free games mostly, so my criteria is different than most.

The most CPU intensive games I play are Battlefield 1 and Witcher 3.

That's basically what I decided to do (built my i3 PC back in May).  My i3 6100 has been a good match with the 970 thus far, so your experience should be roughly the same with a 480.  As long as you know you'll be able to sell the i3 down the road (or use it in some way), I don't see a reason not to start off lower and work up.  Games are starting to take more advantage of 4+ core CPUs, but as long as you know you'll need to upgrade in 2 years to keep up, you should be fine.

If you can manage the extra $50 though, then an i5 would likely serve you for a bit longer and better.
