Neither of those is near optimal for video editing. Get a MacBook Pro, even the 2015 model is great and it's cheaper now. Or buy a windows machine

both of those would preform about the same and work fine in final cut.

If you can get a used 2009-2012 mac pro and don't mind the size, id look into that.

You don't want to edit video with ultra low voltage, thermal throttling broadwell mobile chips.

I have editied lots of video on a macbook air. It handes it fine and in final cut exports faster than most quad core desktops running premiere.

You can even edit 4k just fine on these.

hello,

I was buying a mac for video editing. I don't have high budget  I am looking for a MacBook air 13 inch or a mac mini i5 and 8 gb ram model. which one should i get? and I will be using final cut pro x 10.3.

If you get the Mac Mini or MacBook air, at least get one with the highest amount of memory possible.  Both will come with iGPUs so there won't be much of a difference, but having more memory helps.

Otherwise, consider the iMac or MacBook pro if possible.

Yep, lightweight 4K video is fine.

Get the OLD school 2012 15in Macbook Pro with upgradable ram and storage. So much better than either of these. LOL. That thing has a quad core, can run 32gbs of ram, can run raid0 on 2x1tb of ssd storage.

for the price of the MacBook air i5 at 1.6GHz and 128GB SSD you can get a mac mini upgraded to i7 at 3GHz and a 1TB 5400 rpm hard drive.

My usage on my MacBook air with 256GB SSD is at 50% so i would not recommend anything less that 256GB for storage.

To upgrade the MacBook air to 256GB it would cost an extra $200 which makes it equal in price to a mac mini with 3GHz i7 and 256GB SSD.

Get the mac mini because it has twice the processor for the same price.

Don't buy a mac, especially not for video editing. It will be a bad experience, overpriced and slow.

Sure, cause Premiere is so much faster  /s

Seriously tho. FC offers the fastest and smoothest performance out of any video editing tool that is still affordable (except Media Composer, but that one is above everything in terms of features and price and the industry standart). There is a reason why a lot of people switch to FC, but the only people I know switching to Premiere do it cause Apple dont updates their Mac Pros, not because of the Software.

The second reason why people switch from FC, cause they switch to Media Composer, which is the industry standart - and by far the most powerful video editing tool that is out there.

Your mileage may varie, but at least that is the expierience i have gotten over the last few years.

Ummmm I'd say Apple dropped the ball on FCP. For individual use it's great. But for corporate I actually haven't seen big companies use FCP on a professional level. FCP doesn't do well in workflow in a corporate environment. Most big companies NEED to use preimere or da vinci. I've seen the opposite, where companies or places that require a multi man workflow video editing move to preimere whereas individuals or youtubers move to FCP.

I wouldn't call Adobe Premiere affordable, except if you are a student or work with it. 47€ in Austira in a month is way to expensive if you aren't professional, which the OP probably isn't , or he probably would ask his colleagues rather than LTT.

Most of the big companies use Media Composer from Avid. Got the best enterprise offers and workflow (Avid is generally godlike in workflow -  nothing beats Protools in that criteria for example. I would say Avid is the Vim of Audio/Video - it takes a huge amount of time to get used to it, but once you do, the results are much fast/efficient). Also it is pretty much the only Editing Tool that allows you to edit 8K Videos shot with video cameras and high audio quality. Premiere does allow it , but it stutters terrible, because of the render enginge (seriously Adobe get your shit together) , and FCP drops the ball there cause of missing specs of the PC and because their quicksync is too slow for that quality.

However medium sized companies use a lot of Premiere, because of the Price ( Avid's offers are great when there are a lot of people working, but way to expensive for a medium sized business).

Da vinci is often used as a tool for color correction in addition to Media Composer / Premiere/FCP.

And i have to agree with FCP. Version 7 was the best IMO, because it had a great workflow, but there is not really anything that beats it in personal use. Also Price is King.

These are obviously just my opinions and experiences in the field. YMMV
