So, for the first time I've seen, my PC just turned off, completely, went dead, while playing games, and, it wouldn't start up again, I flipped the toggle switch on the PSU, twice, and everything blinked on for a second and then went off.

I decided to leave it 5 minutes, and I tried it again, and bam, the PC fire right up.

Is this a sign my PSU is dying? It doesn't bother me much as I plan to build a new computer the end of december.

Maybe some short-circuit made the PSU or mobo turn off, it's also good to check your voltages, some mobo's turn off if something goes wrong. If it happens again, you should try another PSU.

The voltages have never been changed, I will check my CPU temps in a moment. And it just did it again so :/

A thing to note is the PSU is getting ridiculously warm

If it's getting very warm the fan it's probably not working, or you have other thermal issues, PSUs also turn off when they get really hot.

The fan is working, I just checked, and I've now taken all the side panels off, when idle my CPU is sitting around 40 degrees celcius, I'm going to run the game I was playing (Yes minecraft lmao) and see what it gets to, however it will probably shut off

I'm saying that your PSU might have a problem and the voltages are getting too high or too low, (example: the 12v is at 12.5v) and the mobo is turn itself off to prevent damage. But if it's getting very warm, it's probably turning off due to temperature

If it was a voltage problem surely it would've happened before? My PC has been on the same cabling for 8-9 months, and I cleaned my PC the other month, but even then, it had been fine since.

Not really, it's unlikely to be, but not impossible that the voltages suddenly started to get crazy, but as I said, it's probably a thermal issue.

Okay, its definitely not my CPU, it's at 65 degrees right now when in MC, neither is it my GPU, as well its MC, and its idling right now, I guess my PSU is overheating then. Fantastic, i can't get a new one for a few months

If you can't afford another PSU right now, try to cool it down.

I could blow AC directly into it

Not sure if it's safe to do that on a PSU, try to put a fan blowing air directly to the PSU (in a way that doesn't affects the PSU fan) maybe that helps.

That's what I meant, Its a AC/Fan thing, and its blowing cool air in the general direction of the PSU

If you take out your WD Black does the system fire right up and run at the BIOS screen for a few minutes without dying?

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

it does this anyway, it can idle on the desktop for a good 10 minutes before crashing

But can you take it out for me and test please? I've dealt with this problem before and am eliminating troubleshooting steps.

Its the PSU, no way its the HDD.

He's saying that the HDD is causing problems to the PSU. Do the following: leave the HDD connected to the PC and go to the BIOS and see how many time it takes to turn off, then, disconnect the HDD, leave it in the BIOS and see if it turns off.

And how will it help being in the BIOS? the PC doesn't crash at Idle, only under load, which makes the HDD irrelevant.

Fucking take it out please, I never suggested that it was the hard drive. Please be a little more cooperative. If you want a full explanation then here you go:

When a PSU starts to deteriorate it usually does so slowly. A WD Black uses quite a lot of power for a hard drive, yet not a significant amount that you'd think would matter. However, in a deteriorating PSU those 10W or so can make a tremendous difference. It would have the same effect as running the system off the iGPU - it would run just fine until the thing deteriorated further.

From experience with an AX760 that's been choked of air to death and my own prebuilts having PSUs crap out on me, I can tell you that whenever I put a laptop HDD or SSD in the system it would magically work just fine without issues. If you left the hard drive in and put a functioning PSU in and left the system running it would, again, work perfectly fine. Thus, since you don't appear to have a random PSU lying around to test with I am simply asking you to take the drive out. It's not difficult to do and won't cost you much time and would help me weed out your problem.

But if the PSU is only causing problems under load, how can he put the system under load without a hard drive?
