X79 build wont show video

Hi there.

Bought a motherboard with cpu preinstalled, X79 system with the C600 chipset. Processor is Intel Xeon 2670 (original sandy bridge). Graphics card is an Asus 2gb GTX770 OC edition. The power supply is a raidmax cobra RX600AE, and is a 600w 80+ gold psu. The motherboard has no onboard video, but displays nothing from the gpu. Fans & lights running tho. My question is, how can I tell whether or not the board has even posted, (no built in speaker) and how can I get some display output? The manual is not very extensive, and cannot assist me with these issues. i have tried resetting cmos, I have tried installing windows 10 and gpu drivers to no avail, and the motherboard comes with a driver disc which allows installation of drivers to windows 7, but the windows 7 installion cannot be completed on another computer, because it asks for drivers for that computer which is currently running on in order to continue. 16gb ram. Help me. Please.

The ability to have video wasn't added until X99

So video works when you're monitor is plugged into the mobo but not when you're plugged through the 770?

Have you messed with video options in BIOS or UEFI? You may need to set the video to the 770 instead of iGPU.

There is no igpu on x79.

My bet is that the psu is at fault. Pairing a 130W chip, and a 230W gpu is too much for that old psu. Even though it is 80+ gold doesn't make it good and psus will degrade over time.

Sorry, thought OP said has onboard.  I should've known better since I've been X58-X99.

Possibly, though it seems like a bit of a stretch.

It is either the psu, motherboard,or gpu, from most to least likely.

If the cpu was "preinstalled" I would take it out and see if there is any bent cpu pins. "Preinstalled" may just be covering that up.

A post code card would help to see what is the issue of the system not booting.

What's the make and model of the MOBO?

Are the LED's just power indicators? Maybe there are some error indicator lights.

Yeah, you might be right in the fact it is too much for it. The psu is brand new, I only bought it the other day, but do you think that it might not be supplying enough power through the cpu connectors? Here is a pic of the power specs for the psu. I couldnt find any useful guides of how to read this thing online, but I am guessing that the left box shows max output through the 3.3+5v cpu connectors? or is it talking about pcie connectors? If it is talking about cpu connectors, then the psu may be the problem, cause as you said, 2670 has 130w or so tdp, and it may go to the peak of that tdp while it boots.

It definitely isnt the gpu, as it has been tested in another pc. I am not going to take out the cpu, because if it IS because of bent pins, it will be harder for me to get a refund for the mobo if I do. Good idea with the post card, I thought finding a mobo speaker would be the only solution. Thanks.

The mobo has an intel C600 chipset, and just has these codes on it. I have googled the codes, and no manufacturers websites come up. I got it from china, but the site I bought it off had lost of good feedback and pics with people using the motherboard in working order. If I cant get it to work in the end I will ask for a refund, but I want that to be last resort as return shipping will cost me. I found out it was C600 from the other peoples pics. The manual mentions nothing about those lights.

The mobo has an intel C600 chipset,

I recognize that board, it is a cheap knock off x79 board from China.

I will also garuantee you that it is the motherboard, one obvious thing is that the manual is hilariously bad, and wrong the first pcie slot is a x1, not a x16.

Also C600 is not x79, and for that matter not even a real chipset, try to get your money back if you can, and buy a real x79 board. Something that for starters that even has an actual manufacturer.

To clarify, I meant that I know it is from the C600 series, I dont actually know if it is a C602, C604 or what have you. There is no way for me to check that without getting into the bios, and yes that is the motherboard I have in that picture, and yes, the manual is hilariously bad, but again, I would prefer to get it working than to return it. I will try a friends psu and see if I can get it workig with that. The C600 series chipsets do exist, they are intel server chipsets, made for use with E5 xeons, such as this one. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/server-chipsets/server-chipset-c600.html

Basically, part of the problem is that if it actually does work, and I send it back and they get it working immediately, then I would probably not get a refund. So I need to try basically everything I can before sending it back. Thanks.

  • 3 weeks later...

Update on this: I got it working. Turns out the ram I have was the problem. Either I have 4 faulty ram sticks, or the ram brand is incompatible, but either way, beware of kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G sticks. Tried a Samsung 2gb M378B5673FH0-CH9 stick from an everyday computer, and everything worked flawlessly. So I guess this chinese motherboard aint so bad after all. Didnt have access to that ram initially, which is why I didnt try it sooner. The reason this computer was not booting, was because it was failing memtest. I ended up getting a beeper, but no beep codes actually were produced, so it didnt do much good.
