This is going to be a wild ride... So strap in. (It's a short one)

2mhafk8.jpg

So I begin running into an issue with Overwatch specifically where my card hit 92C!
Usually stays around 70C. Both of which, I am just not comfortable with.
While speaking to a friend about picking up an Accelero Xtreme IV, he mentioned taking the card apart and trying MX-4 TIM.
I thought, why not. He already had some and it was free so it didn't hurt to try...

(All tests were done with Heaven Benchmark on Extreme 2560x1440)

Well it did, (A tiny bit) It increased my temps by 1~2C

Stock TIM sat around 70C, with the new TIM it reached 71~72C...
So that test was a fail.

So, before giving up on the night, he said...

"I have an idea..."

And left. Shortly thereafter he returned with a GIANT cooler, from his current GTX 980Ti... (Currently running a Accelero Xtreme IV)

THE RESULTS

24fihrs.jpg

Stock - 70C

New TIM - 71~72C
New TIM and Cooler - 53C!!!!!!

A drop of 17C!

Some Frankenstein-ing had to be done... Not a lot actually. We took the fans off to reroute a cable a little bit, but that was about it.

And we did have a little bit of a weight issue...
This thing helped during tests

2gv3s4k.jpg

I did have to use some old pipe I had laying around as a makeshift GPU Stick to hold the weight when I got home.

I am extremely happy with how this mod turned out, and although I do have to return the 980Ti cooler at some point, I will be picking up an Accelero Xtreme IV before that happens.

Well that's it. Thanks for reading all the way though :)

Thats the most obvious fix for Founders Edition... Take a different cooler. :)

Glad you like it mon, always nice doing some own modding and tinkering.

I didn't say it was a ground breaking fix :'D

Thanks man!

It probably hurt your temps because of the way you applied the TIM.

You put WAY too much, and didn't put it in the center, you spread it everywhere.

For GPU it's better to spread it thinly imo, there's no heatspreader unlike CPU.

It was completely covered. When it was removed again we could clearly see it was completely covered. There were no air bubble issues.

Here, plz learn about thermal paste spreading when the heatsink is placed on top:

applying-thermal-paste-spread-en.jpg

Notice that after removal it doesn't look any different from the others.

All the other methods have more paste in the center, which is what works well:

Jayztwocents did well by putting a big glob in the middle of the chip at the end before putting the heatsink on.

That's why it literally made no difference, because more in the middle = spread to sides with no air.

Spreading thermal paste is what is bad. On ANY chip, not just CPU.

So what's the max percentage for the fan speed allowed by the bios for an fe card and what were you running yours at?

How bad will it affect the final temp? 5c? 10c? 20c?

In this case 2C over stock, where usually you get 0-3 degree improvement (unless the GPU is really old, then replacing thermal paste can do like 5-10 degrees difference)

So total was about maybe 3-4C worse than the pea method.

It's not a huge difference, but the difference gets bigger the older the GPU is because thermal paste used from the factory dries out in about 5-10 years and replacing it helps a ton :)

Either way, replacing thermal paste with a better thermal paste should never increase temps, if it does you should try again because something went wrong.

What the heck dude...

Many people read topics on public forums, not just you.

I don't want people getting misinformation and thinking that they should not replace the thermal paste on their GPU because it increases their temps, that's simply not true.

Even linus has made videos before on how to replace your GPU thermal paste properly, and it does lower temperatures when done properly.

If someone makes a mistake when applying thermal paste, I will correct them.

It is not against the rules to correct people, but it is against the rules to tell people to shut up.

If you have a problem with something, please use the report button that is at the bottom of the post.

With a brand new card like this, you are talking about a MAX 4C difference between lowest and highest temp. So bug off.

I am not sure what you mean... but Zotac's Firestorm let's the fans run at 100%... I use a curve that ramps up as they get hotter, maxing at 100% at 70C.

We used a laser thermometer thingy, the VRAMS weren't getting too hot actually, at full load they sat at 70C.

The card is most definitely bending a bit. Nothing that is of any concern, but it is not perfectly flat.
