So I have the ability to run 2 sli cards in x16 x16 but it will not work with my 2 970s. they run at x8. is this much of aN issue? I see videos showing a small improvement between the two but like.... is it worth my time to buy a longer bridge and try and also figure why the cards won't do sli in x16? or just forget it and do run x8

PCIe hasn't been a bottleneck for a very long time, and will not be also. Running 8x is good enough and IF (what isn't always the case but actually reverse sometimes) it gets better it's so marginally that you won't notice it.
