I posted a similar thread but it seems to be dead and none of the solutions I've tried have worked.

My gpu tanks while in game,  usually hovering around 70-80%, and very rarely getting into the 90's.  This cause my fps to usually max out in the 80's, and getting as low as 50 in some scenarios.  And oddly enough the usage seems to go down when there are more intensive moments that would demand more usage.  My gpu temperatures don't get higher than 70c.  My cpu hangs around ~75% usage and around 55c.

Looking back I feel that this trend may have started a year ago when I updated from windows 8 to 10.  I'm not sure though.  I can't come up with any solution

What I've tried:

  • Fresh driver install
  • Fresh install of Windows
  • Switching PCI-E ports
  • Swapping out identical cards
  • Made sure Nvidia control panel was set to prefer max performance
  • Made sure power options in windows were set to high performance

Build:

i7 4790k @ 4.7ghz
MSI z97 g45 gaming
MSI 980 ti
Corsair Vengeance Pro ddr3 16gb 8x2 1866

Playing @ 1080p 144hz

Here are some afterburner graphs while in game:

Dafuq is going on with that fan?

That looks really weird, does the fan still work properly? Or do you have a custom fan curve activated?

It's my fan curve

That's a dank fan curve you got there m8.

Anyway, i would download 3dmark, do some benckmarks and compare the graphics score with other 980 ti's to figure out if it can perform as it should in an ideal-ish scenario.

Your board only supports up to 1600 Mhz ram. Did you overclock your Motherboard to 1866?

Battlefield 1, similar issues any other game.

Try 3dmark firestrike (download the demo from Steam). My assumption is that those were CPU intensive scenes, where the CPU was "bottlenecking the graphics card... If you observe the same behavior with firestrike, then something really weird is going on.

Alright I ran firestrike and I seem to have some pretty good results.  I notice a trend that I always get better usage in benchmarks compared to in game.

That score is on par with all GTX 980 Ti's. The physics score is comparable to my 5820K's as well. The games you are playing might have CPU intensive scenes where the CPU "bottlenecks" the GPU, hence the occasional GPU usage dips.

The thing is my roommate and some other friends have nearly identical builds except they have skylake cpu's and I'm getting much worse performance then them.  And if I look at battlefield 1 benchmarks with the same build their performance is also much better.  To me it doesn't make any sense.

Another thing to note is that Skylake gaming builds tend to have much faster RAM (DDR4 can be found at 4000 MHz). Skylake chips also begin pulling away from their predecessors when supplied with fast RAM. Try comparing different games?

I doubt ddr3 is really bottle necking my build like that, that would be a bit insane.

I'm updating my bios and I'll check back.
